I got up and nodded. “Of course.” My tone was weak from the exhaustion of the drama, and I, too, could use a getaway.

“Still up for the hotel?”

“That’d be nice, actually.”

He led the way until we were back inside his car. We drove in silence until we found a decent three-star hotel that wasn’t too bad in price, not that it was a struggle in the area. After we checked in at the front desk and got our key cards, we found our standard-size one-bed room several flights up and rushed inside.

Topher shut the door and burst into sobs. I’d never seen him this way before. “Hold me?” He barely said it from how shattered he was.

I did just as he’d asked, and I gave him the biggest embrace I could. “I’m sorry I had to tell you this. Your mom made me promise not to tell you when she confronted me about it, but you deserved to know everything. I’ve neverlied to you and I won’t start to.”
