Chapter 3

I stopped in my tracks and turned to him. “Don’t you think I’ve tried? Do you think I enjoy being angry with you? I don’t. It’s exhausting. But every time I see you—which, thankfully, isn’t that often—all I can think about is wringing your neck.”

“Is that what you want? To fight with me?”

“What did you expect, Clay? That I’d throw my arms around you and congratulate you?”

“Well…yeah.”

Instead, I folded my arms across my chest as I leaned against the wall. “We were together for four years and you never expressed anyinterest in making our relationship official with a civil union or anything.”

“You were always complaining about how your parents’ divorce messed you up when you were a teenager, so I just assumed you were against that kind of thing.”

“Or maybe youjust weren’t interested in being with mefor the long haul. Oh, wait. You weren’t.”
