Chapter 12

They both lapsed back into cold, unhappy silence.

“Well, regardless of what else you might be, Total Enigma, you’re no monster.” Tarquin wasn’t surprised when his companion didn’t respond to that any more than he’d responded to anything else. “You were trying to protect the village, weren’t you?” he asked quietly. “You knew the haldur were there. Were you following them?”

Tea nodded.

“That was very kind.” Tarquin looked at his companion again, but Tea kept looking at the floor, so all Tarquin could see was his grayish ear. “And suicidal, actually. You look like you’ve been trampled by a herd of disgruntled kintara.”

Tea scowled.

“Well, it was,” Tarquin insisted. “Kind and suicidal, both. I mean, you know that they think you’re a monster out to decimate their flocks and kidnap their children…Seven hells.” How could he keep forgetting the whole village was dead? “I’m so sorry we came back too late to help them.”
