The group continued on its way a short time later, retrieving hoods and cloaks from the depths of their bags as the deluge from the icy ceiling showed no signs of slowing down.

“I’m not sure what’s caused it,” Mirra told them. “It’s been there as long as I can remember, always melting, but never shrinking. Probably some litany that went astray. You wouldn’t believe the kind of things that can happen when a transmutation gets out of control.”

“I can imagine,” Vix said, glancing askance at the sheet of solid ice above her.

Mirra continued to talk as she led the way, rattling off facts and tidbits of information quicker than Vix could absorb them. She had never seen Mirra so enthusiastic before. After their conversation, she seemed determined to be as helpful as possible.

Still, Vix was undecided. She began to feel she was being unfair to Mirra; the young witch was clearly trying her hardest to prove herself to Vix and Caine.
