David entered the kitchen and threw his shopping bag on the table. He saw the surprised looks of Gustav and Berenice sitting at tea.
"If I didn't want to be with you, I wouldn't have even started this," he continued in a firm, resolute voice. "Berenice, you asked if I loved you. I loved you, I think. I adored you since I was a child, but I always felt I wasn't good enough for you. In my eyes you were an ideal to whom I should provide everything. Maybe that was my mistake. Because, you see, I do not have such prospects as some student at university. That's why before I got the courage to confess my feelings to you, you had already found a fiancé.
