Dead end

Our rally point was in Abashiri, there we maintained a low security posture on the ground, waiting for support and backup. For some strange reason, coms weren't working.

Me and Henry were on watch, lurking around for any Kaiju nearby. The fight barley began and the company has already lost 60% of its members.

"Damnit, what the hell is going on.. why haven't we moved yet?" Henry was annoyed.

I wasn't sure either, but it seems like we weren't making any contact with anybody. Maybe this is why previous unit were struggling to take back Japan.

"We were supposed to meet up with gunny and sir, but its been 6 hours, if we stay here then who knows when the Kaiju next attack will be" I said.

Sergeant Myron took the command for second platoon, Lance Corporal Southerner took command for our platoon. Third platoon was completely wiped out, so they joined ours.

"Miller, Henry, you guys are good to go to a break" said one of the Corporal. We switched out duty, and walked back to our main post. There, we were allowed to come out of our Mechs, and take a 10 - 20 minute break pissing and eating MRE's.

After our break, I walked by Lance Corporal Miller, Lance Corporal Southerner, and Sergeant Myron. I was curious, I wanted to know what was going on.

"Do you guys know what's happening? Why haven't we carry on the mission yet?" I asked.

They were dead silent..

"What the fuck do you think? Kilo is completely wiped out, Corporal Murphy is no where to be find, and our company is half dead" Lance Corporal Miller commented.

"We're not getting anything, not from Bravo or Raiders.. we're in the dark as for now" said Lance Corporal Southerner.

"But we do plan to move, staying here is risky, Kaiju can attack any moment-" Sergeant Myron said.

"So is taking initiative, we don't have enough Marines to go against the Kaiju's.. there's nothing we can do" Lance Corporal Miller sighed.

Even the seniors weren't sure what to do, anything we thought of doing was too risky, and so was not doing anything. We didn't have enough fuel to make it back to base, even if we did, who knows when the Kaiju will make their attacks. They're probably waiting under the water..

Gunnery Sergeant Hoovich and First Lieutenant Peal still haven't contacted us, time was running out and we had to do something. Moving in means we have a higher chance of dying, if we retreat, we might be able to make contact. Maybe just enough for radio contact.

"I have an idea" I said.

At first, they didn't take me seriously. Mostly because I was a boot, but part of it was because any idea was risky. The plan was to have as much marine in a single Mech, while using the remaining fuel of the other mech.

It would be difficult, because the mech could only fit up to 2 person, by sitting on the lap and combat would easily be difficult. We would need people to hang onto the mech outside, but the speed would be too much, Mechs would have to fly slow.

"If it works, we'll survive and even retrieve important data. Even if its just 1 mech going back, but by the time it does, all of us here will probably be dead.." said Sergeant Myron.

"Abandoning our mechs.. tch" Lance Corporal didn't really like the plan, but she thought it was probably the best case scenario.

"We'll go with the plan" said Lance Corporal Southerner. "But we'll need a few of us to stay here, maintain an outpost until support comes back".

Our new objective, return with most of the company, while leaving a few to fend off any Kaiju that tries to attack.

"Sergeant Myron, have second platoon informed. Miller take lead in first platoon to retreat" Lance Corporal stated.

"No, I'll stay here and fight-"

"Negative, I need you to live to fight another day, and you're most experience out of the company. First Platoon will have 20 Marines staying back, you understand?" he said.

We gathered for the final brief, as platoon leaders explained the objective. Most of the Marine opposed the idea, but eventually they had to make a decision.

"I'm not asking you to stay, as soon as we take off, we will need some of the Marines to stay back and defend the the squads retreating" said Sergeant Myron.

But something caught first platoon..

"Wait, why the fuck does 2nd platoon get to all leave?!" a loud voice heard from the crowd.

"Yeah, what the fuck is that bullshit? 2nd platoon didn't do shit!"

"If you want to leave, then leave. I won't force you all to stay, but if we all decide to leave, I won't be able to defend you all... most importantly if we are caught off-guard, our chance of survival is next to 0" Southerner said.

Everyone was silent, was it selfishness, or just human nature. The desire to live is often confused in this world. Maybe everyone was just scared, maybe it was a fight done for nothing. I mean, I joined to defend my country, to defend my nation. Was it blind patriotism or nationalism, was I a retard for thinking what I did was worth anything.

I just wanted to go back home, back to my little brother. Something the only thing I have left, I served no purpose being in the Corp. Seeing my friends die left to right, just to achieve nothingness.. it was truly ignorant of me. How couldn't I see this.. damnit Mat I'm sorry. I should've never left you. But it seems like the Marine Corp is asking me to do one last gay shit, to fully serve my life as a Marine and the oath I swore to defend this nation.

"I wanna stay sergeant!" yelled someone from 2nd platoon.

"Me too!" said another person in 2nd platoon.

Even though it wasn't enough, it was more than anything. I decided to fight as well.

"Tobar, there's no way."

"If everyone retreats, we all die.. I'm going to do what's best" I said.

"You're not a fucking hero, if you die here, it'll be meaningless"

"Maybe.." I said. "This is the first step of of humanity victory." We have to fight, no matter what, even if it builds the smallest hope.

"Good luck, Southerner.." said Lance Corporal Miller.

"Don't regret it" Henry final words.

The unit began departing, a lot of mechs were left behind. As the Archangel rose, so did the Kaiju.

"Here they come! Defending support unit, make sure none of these Kaiju passes through us!" Southerner shouted.
