Chapter 88: Zombie Siege
Seeing that everyone had gathered, Ye Zian spoke up:
"Starting this afternoon, all search team members will hunt zombies with full strength. If you discover the location of any mutated zombies, report it swiftly to your respective team leaders for cleanup."
"Yes!" came the loud replies from around him.
The nearby zombies had already been cleared out by the search teams. After some thought, Ye Zian decided to move the fortress to a residential area about ten kilometers away.
There were still a large number of ordinary zombies there, and likely many mutated ones as well.
This way, the tasks for the sixth level of the Tower of Heaven should be completed.
In five days, a zombie siege would erupt. Although Ye Zian had slain the rampaging barbarian king at the other end of the Xiacheng Bridge in his past life, it was inevitable that new S-Class mutated zombies would lead a horde to invade the fortress.
Suddenly, Chen Ruoxue spoke up:
"City Lord, do you think making noise in the fortress will attract the zombies inside?"
Chen Ruoxue had a sudden thought: by making noise in the city, they could lure the nearby zombies to the fortress, saving the search teams the trouble of scouring each building. With the fortress providing protection, the safety of the team members would be greatly enhanced.
Ye Zian slapped his forehead, realizing the brilliance of her suggestion:
"Right! How did I not think of that?"
Previously, due to distance constraints, it had been difficult to draw a large number of zombies from the surrounding suburban factories.
Now that the fortress could move closer to the residential area, they could use an air raid alarm to attract a massive number of zombies.
With the protection of the fortress walls, the likelihood of the team members encountering danger would also decrease significantly, while they could familiarize themselves with the scene of a zombie siege.
With that thought, Ye Zian addressed the surrounding team members:
"All team members, follow Chen Ruoxue's suggestion and prepare for the battle this afternoon."
Not far away, a striking figure appeared before Ye Zian; it was Lin Qiaoqiao, the head of the catering team and the youngest five-star chef in the Great Summer before the apocalypse. She was also staring wide-eyed at the moving fortress.
Lin Qiaoqiao, still an ordinary person without awakened abilities, trembled as she held onto the wall, looking up at the fortress towering fifty meters above.
Ye Zian called out to the curious Lin Qiaoqiao:
"Qiaoqiao, please instruct the cafeteria to prepare more food. Let the team members eat heartily at noon so they have the energy to hunt zombies this afternoon."
Lin Qiaoqiao, enjoying the fresh air outside after being cooped up in the cafeteria smelling grease every day, immediately replied:
"Yes, City Lord! I'll go prepare right away."
Yet inside, she sighed bitterly, 'Another meal for thousands of people? I'll be exhausted.'
Of course, Lin Qiaoqiao was simply venting her frustrations, and seeing the team members enjoy her cooking filled her with a sense of accomplishment.
After the points reform this morning, as the head of the catering team, Lin Qiaoqiao could now earn at least 500 points daily.
A bit of grumbling later, she gathered her team members and headed back to the cafeteria to prepare lunch.
Meanwhile, the other team members busied themselves with organizing their gear.
After Ye Zian had slain Su Chen, he had obtained a blueprint for crafting ranged weapons, allowing for the selection of short bows, long bows, or crossbows.
Crossbows had obvious advantages: faster firing speed and stability, but the user's attributes didn't enhance their power, which was fixed.
However, bows were different; as the user's agility and strength increased, so did the power of the arrows.
Considering they would be engaged in close-quarters urban combat, and given the short bow's portability, Ye Zian decided to exchange for the blueprint of the **Elven Short Bow**, a blue-quality weapon that, importantly, didn't require arrows. Each shot would automatically conjure a pale blue light arrow.
After being produced tirelessly by the eight equipment manufacturing machines, every combat team member was now equipped with one.
The students, experiencing an unlimited self-service meal for the first time in the fortress, eagerly filled their bellies, especially the temporary student team members who were relishing the food. Currently, the average attributes of all team members were around 13 points, equivalent to the standards of special forces before the apocalypse.
Four search teams, along with the city defense team, stationed themselves at the fortress walls, while the logistics team provided support.
As for Ye Zian, he led a support team composed of logistics department ability users to deal with the mutated zombies.
With the sound of a powerful air raid alarm echoing, the ground began to shake.
Tens of thousands of zombies surged toward the fortress like a tidal wave.
Listening to the deafening roars of the zombies indicated that there were no survivors left in this residential area. Most people remained lost in dreams of rescue, only to be transformed into zombies when the undead broke through their doors.
Ordinary people in this apocalypse were truly helpless.
Chen Ruoxue, looking seriously at the throngs of zombies below, shouted to her team:
"Ordinary team members will split into two groups and take turns shooting. Ability users are responsible for preventing the zombies from climbing the walls."
As the zombies drew closer, Chen Ruoxue commanded:
"Fire!"
Upon receiving the command, the team members immediately released their bowstrings, launching pale blue light arrows into the horde of zombies.
True to their blue-quality short bows, each arrow pierced through four or five zombies before dissipating.
Rows of zombies fell, but it still didn't stop the advance of the ones behind them.
Ye Zian lowered the fortress to five meters above the ground, ensuring that the zombies would come in hordes. If it was too high, they would become disoriented.
However, with the fortress hovering five meters up, the front zombies were unable to reach the fortress's foundation, becoming nothing more than cannon fodder, serving as stepping stones for the ones behind.
Yet the height of the pile of corpses became increasingly noticeable.
"Pour gasoline on them! Fire ability users, prepare to ignite the zombies' bodies below!"
Barrels of gasoline were poured down from the logistics team onto the zombie corpses, and alongside Liu Qinghuan's fireball technique, a ring of flames surrounded the base of the fortress, igniting the bodies.
The air filled with the stench of burning flesh, a smell that the fortress residents had long grown accustomed to, no longer causing the same shock as before.
They remained unfazed, focusing on killing the zombies below.
"Roar!"
A few B-Class mutated zombies appeared. These zombies were several times larger than ordinary ones. Some were rotund, overweight zombies, while others moved with the swiftness of predators, mingling within the horde.
Now it was time for Ye Zian to take action.
"I'll handle the mutated zombies at this wall; you all go support the other walls."
With that, Ye Zian summoned two long knives from his space and stood atop the wall before leaping down.
As a leaping predator came soaring toward him, Ye Zian stomped down hard on its back mid-air.
