Chapter 146: Zombies Are Not Scary, Are They?
The sudden voice that came in caused the three hiding in the cellar to turn pale.
The female student clung to Doctor Shen, her face pale, crying as she glared at the male student holding the iron rod.
Blaming him for being so careless, not even realizing they were followed.
But none of the three spoke, they just tried their best to remain quiet.
In their hearts, they hoped the people or whatever creature outside would leave soon.
After a few seconds of silence.
The woman's voice above spoke again, "We're from the auto repair shop, you've probably heard us over the radio. We can talk. If you're willing, you can leave with us. How much longer do you think you can hide down there? Sooner or later, you'll have to come out."
The three looked at each other.
In their eyes, there was confusion.
What radio? Auto repair shop? Never heard of it.
But the people above clearly knew they were hiding here.
The male student whispered, "Sister Shen, it's probably not Yang Yitian and his group, maybe it's the skeletons I saw earlier."
The female doctor's face grew even more worried. After hesitating for a moment, she looked towards the cellar entrance and said, "You won't hurt us, right?"
The voice above continued, "If we wanted to hurt you, we'd have broken in already. We have a survivor base. If you don't want to starve to death here, you should come out."
The three whispered among themselves.
They decided to go out and talk to the people.
As the voice said, if they wanted to harm them, they could've just broken in and killed the three of them.
No need for all this talking.
"Alright, we're coming out!" the female doctor said.
She was the first to climb the iron ladder and opened the cellar entrance.
The bright sunlight made it hard to open her eyes.
As her vision adjusted, she saw a woman in a blue stab-proof vest standing not far away.
Behind her were dozens of skeletons in leather armor, holding spears.
They were really bone frames!
The female doctor's eyes widened in shock.
"We're survivors from the auto repair shop. The nearby zombies have been cleared. You can either come with us or stay here," Li Yanhong said first.
The female doctor, still in shock, looked at her and then at the skeletons behind her, asking, "What are these?"
Li Yanhong glanced back and explained, "Awakened powers. I can control skeletons."
"Powers? What powers?"
Li Yanhong frowned and then realized, "You don't have a radio? You don't know what's going on outside?"
"No idea!" the female doctor replied.
At that moment, the two high school students also stepped out.
The boy had his right hand in his pocket, and one pant leg was stiff, clearly hiding an iron rod.
"People use radios to communicate with the outside world. Every day, they broadcast survival tips, types of zombies, their weaknesses, and details about powers. Awakened people can gain various abilities. These skeletons are one of them." Li Yanhong briefly explained.
The woman looked confused, but it was clear the other party had no ill intentions, at least they were taking the time to explain.
Seeing the doctor wasn't speaking, Li Yanhong continued, "Alright, let's get to the point. Are you staying here, or are you coming with us? If you come with us, you'll have to take on assigned work. It may be tough, but you'll have a safe place to live and enough to eat."
The two students looked at the female doctor.
"What kind of work?" the doctor asked.
"If you have special skills, you'll do what you're good at. If not, you'll do labor work."
"I'm a doctor, and these two are still students."
Upon hearing she was a doctor, Li Yanhong took another look at her and said, "As a doctor, you can be responsible for people's health. The students can learn some skills. In times like these, you need to do something to survive. No one will support others for free."
The three didn't need to discuss it further. The female doctor nodded and agreed.
"Alright, we'll go with you."
Li Yanhong nodded.
Having a doctor was a significant gain.
Although the prison had a doctor, it was always better to have more in these critical positions.
Besides, doctors specialize in different areas. Having more was a safeguard.
"Good, follow me. It may not be better than before, but at least it's safe, and you won't starve," Li Yanhong said.
"We still have some rice and vegetables down below, should we take them?" the doctor asked.
"Bring them."
The male student said, "I'll get them."
He pulled the iron rod from his pant leg, tossed it aside, and ran down to grab the half-empty sack of rice and some daily supplies before climbing back up.
Li Yanhong didn't say much and led them out of the courtyard.
Once outside, the three of them turned even paler and quickly followed Li Yanhong.
The entire alley was packed with skeletons.
Among them were a few animal skeletons, wagging their tails like dogs.
Wu Heng was waiting at the alley entrance.
Seeing them come out, he nodded, "Let's go!"
"Alright!"
The group started moving again, heading back to where the trucks were parked.
......
Soon, they arrived at the parking area for the trucks.
Standing there, both Wu Heng and Li Yanhong frowned.
There wasn't a single truck in sight.
It was obvious something had gone wrong.
"What's going on?" Wu Heng asked.
Li Yanhong shook her head.
"There shouldn't be any issues. If there were zombies or danger, Qiangzi and the others would've contacted us via the radio. Something must've happened," Li Yanhong analyzed.
The idea that the group had driven off and betrayed them was impossible.
With Wu Heng, they had food and drink, and once they moved to the prison, their living conditions would improve even more.
If they ran away, surviving would be incredibly difficult.
So they didn't suspect that the group had left. They suspected they had encountered some danger.
At that moment, the male student, carrying the rice sack, stepped forward and said, "Maybe they were captured by Yang Yitian's group."
Wu Heng turned to look at him.
His face and school uniform were dirty.
"Yang Yitian? Another survivor?"
The male student put the rice sack down and said, "Yang Yitian's group steals things. There used to be other survivors, but they made noise to attract zombies, and the rest were bitten to death."
"Is Yang Yitian from your village?"
"No, there's a highway not far from the village where there aren't many cars. They used to ride their motorcycles there. A lot of people from the village followed them. When the zombie outbreak happened, they were nearby and escaped to the village." the boy explained.
"How many of them are there?"
"Six people."
Six people? With only six of them, they might not be able to overpower the truck crew.
The boy noticed Wu Heng's skeptical expression and added, "They have guns. Don't know where they got them from. Otherwise, I wouldn't be afraid of them."
Guns?
That complicates things.
"What kind of guns?"
"Pistols!"
Wu Heng nodded, understanding, and asked, "Do you know where they are?"
"Yeah, they're over there."
Nearby, Hunter-One finished its inspection.
It pointed in the same direction.
"Let's go," Wu Heng ordered, and the group began moving toward the location.
......
Meanwhile.
Yang Yitian circled the military truck, patting the steel panels on one side, saying, "This truck's been modified pretty damn well."
They were into vehicles too, but they dealt with motorcycles.
Even if they had the tools, they didn't have the skills to modify a truck like this.
"Brother Yang, these people might be trouble. They've got military radios in the truck. Did we get ourselves into something?" one of his men warned.
Yang Yitian turned and kicked him, cursing, "What are you scared of? At a time like this, afraid of what? We don't even fear zombies, and you're afraid of them?"
"Exactly! We've already taken the stuff, what's there to be afraid of? Even if someone comes, we'll just run."
"Right, it's too late to be scared now, who's afraid of who?"
"Brother Yang, what do we do with those drivers?" another man asked.
Yang Yitian began walking back and asked, "Did you get anything out of them?"
"We did. They said they're from some auto repair shop and came here to find steel."
"Steel? To eat?"
"They said it's for building fences."
"Makes sense. Building some fences, we could add a layer around our courtyard too," Yang Yitian said, continuing, "Do they have any other people?"
"They said there are two more, went to a warehouse nearby."
"Damn, just two people went out? Not afraid of getting eaten by zombies? I bet they've got at least five or six more."
"Right, Brother Yang's right. So, what do we do with these guys?" his man asked.
Yang Yitian thought for a moment and said, "Keeping them is just a waste of food. Kill them..."
Thud, thud, thud~!
Before he could finish his sentence, the sound of rapid footsteps approached.
Looking back, they saw several large animal skeletons rushing toward them.
The group rubbed their eyes, not quite believing what they were seeing.
What the hell? Zombies are one thing, but now bones are standing up?
"What are you standing there for? Shoot!"
Bang~!
Before he could finish shouting, a deafening gunshot rang out from afar.
Yang Yitian's head exploded instantly, and he fell backward to the ground.
The rest of them scrambled to pull out their guns, but before they could fire, they saw Yang Yitian lying dead, half his head missing.
"Shit."
Looking up, they saw a skeleton standing on a rooftop in the distance.
It was holding a sniper rifle.
