Angel Smile

The background is set in a small, quiet town on the outskirts of Seoul. In this town, people were friendly, except for one particular neighbourhood. In this neighbourhood, everybody lived their lives as if treading on eggshells, all because of one particular household: the Lees. People surnamed Lee were a dime a dozen, but these particular set of Lees were unique. Dysfunctional. The family consisted of four people; the father and breadwinner Lee Do Joon, the delinquent son Lee Hyuk, the top student Lee Gun, and the town's most beautiful girl Lee Yeo Ri. Lee Yeo Ri was regarded as a saving grace, but before anybody knew it, the saving grace was slowly disintegrating from within. Hidden underneath her perfect, angelic smile, was a girl who was slowly being crushed and torn apart. This is her story. — TRIGGER WARNING — This story contains depictions of rape, violence, and other traumatic scenes. — Cover art by Ren (Twitter: @ikinashi_ren) — Please consider commenting or reviewing; any and all feedback are appreciated! :D

Good People Still Exists

After seeing the Shim father-and-daughter pair, Yeo Ri laid out the beddings and made their beds.

It felt like it had been a long time since they slept together side-by-side. Although she felt happy about the arrangement, she found herself missing the nice, big bed of Jin Goo's guest room.

"It's not bedtime yet, so why did you lay out the beddings, Yeo Ri-ah?" Gun asked quizzically. The sun was still high up in the sky, so he wondered why she was doing it so early.

"So that I won't have to do it later," Yeo Ri replied with a mischievous smile.

"Alright, then." Gun smiled helplessly in response. He thought that it was fine. Yeo Ri had been working very hard to maintain the household as the only female in the house, so it was alright if she didn't want to bother anymore. They had already left that house anyways, so it was fine for her to do whatever she wants.

The trio spent the next few hours arranging their belongings. They didn't have much to begin with, so they took their time.

Left with so much time to spare, Yeo Ri decided to clean the house. She found an old rag and a small broom-and-duster in one of the cupboards and swept the entire house clean.

Neither Gun nor Hyuk wanted to let her do everything by herself, so they also helped out.

Although the house was relatively small, it was still tiring to clean the whole place in detail.

That night, they decided to get delivery food instead since there were no ingredients to cook and they didn't have the energy to go out. However, just as they made the call, their door was knocked again.

Gun motioned Yeo Ri to sit down just as she got ready to open the door.

He opened the door, "Yes?"

"My, you're the new tenants who just moved in, right? Here, have some dinner. I made too much today," the middle-aged lady by the door says, unceremoniously inviting herself into the house. She held a small pot in her hands.

Gun looked at the woman strangely, "Excuse me, but who are you?"

"Ah, I'm the landlord's wife. You can just call me 'Auntie'!" The woman grinned. She looked around the house, but there didn't seem to be a table for her to put the food she had brought along. She headed to the kitchen familiarly, setting it down on the counter.

"Where's the dining table?" She asked the Lee trio who seemed dumbfounded by her actions. "My gosh, could it be that you guys don't have one? How about a portable table? There should be one left by the previous tenant, I think."

"Ah, yes, it's over here..." Yeo Ri snapped out of her thoughts and immediately pulled out the portable table that they had found while doing their cleaning.

She hastily set it up in the middle of the room.

The woman nodded in satisfaction. "Do you have rice?"

"No—" Yeo Ri didn't manage to finish her sentence before being cut off by the older woman.

Auntie Shim slapped her forehead, "Of course you wouldn't! I'm so stupid! You all just moved in, how can there be any groceries in the house yet! Aigoo, so dumb, so dumb." She pulled out a phone from her pocket, dialling a number.

"Daughter! Can you scoop some rice and bring it here? And some kimchi too." She paused for a moment to hear her daughter's reply. "Where? Here! The new tenant's house!"

"Hurry up, or they might die from starvation. Gosh, you slug!" Auntie Shim chastised as she ended the call. Then, she smiled at the trio, "Just wait a bit, my daughter will bring some rice for you."

The Lee trio was speechless. It was their first time meeting such a bold woman. On top of that, she was kind enough to share some food with them.

Yeo Ri hurriedly bowed in gratitude, "Thank you very much, Auntie."

Gun similarly thanked her, and while he was a bit awkward, Hyuk also lowered his head in thanks.

"Oh, don't mention it!" The woman chuckled. They were young and polite, so she was immediately taken by the new tenants. She smiled warmly at them, "If you don't have any food in the house, come and have dinner with us." She openly invited them to her house.

"Thank you very much," they repeated again.

Soon afterwards, Shim Yu Mi arrived, carrying a bowl of kimchi and a larger bowl filled to the brim with rice.
