It was another boring morning for one the strongest monsters in the world. The wind dragon, Rontu, has lived a repetitive, lazy life for centuries, until an encounter with the human hero will push his life onto a much more exciting path. ~~~~~~~ Cover by Jacobmccoy130
The morning sun roused me from my slumber, and I turned to look out of the cave I called home. Outside the cave I saw a breathtakingly beautiful vista filled with towering mountains and the azure sea. If I hadn't seen this every morning for the past 80 years, I would have stood with my mouth agape for hours on end.
I had thoroughly investigated this mountain, and I know every inch of it. I regularly patrol the area, killing beasts that are too powerful, and maintaining order, as that is what I was told to do by the goddess Gaia. She created my egg, and when I hatched she appeared before me and asked me to be a "Guardian of Nature". If I accepted I would have to either guard an area or watch over a human or demon settlement and stop it expanding too much. But it sounded like a lot of effort, so I refused. In hindsight, this was very rude to say to the being that literally just created me, but to my surprise they did not force me to do anything, instead showing a knowing smile before disappearing. I guess I had ended up doing what they wanted, even though they didn't force me to.
I didn't live here solely for the view, though. This mountain was also the place of an intersection of ley lines, a relatively rare occurrence that results in an unusually large amount of mana seeping onto the surface. As dragons can live almost on mana alone, this was a brilliant place for a lazy dragon such as myself to live, especially as few people ever come to bother me this high up in the mountains. But today I wasn't so lucky.
"You shall die here today dragon! You're reign of terror over the village of Malt ends now!" said an annoying human in shiny armour with an oversized sword. 'How does he even lift that with his twig-sized arms?' I thought, but I didn't have any intention to fight, so I'll just ignore him.
"I, the hero Raymond, shall vanquish you here today! You should be thankful that you can even stand before a glorious being such as myself. I expect you to at least put up a fi- hey! are you listening!?" oh. Oh no. It seems I've been found out. How shall I ever survive
"I was trying to at least give you an honorable death, which is already more than you deserve, but now this?! I will certainly end you!" Alas, my brilliant plan has failed, and it has even made this intruder more angry. Seeing as he is intent on attacking me, I'll use Inspect to see if he really is who he says he is.

Judging by his lack of shield or similar defensive object, I had expected him to be more strength-based. I wonder if the Hero class gives him a bonus to his endurance? That aside, this human certainly shouts loudly for his status. I haven't seen any monster with any stat above 500 for quite some time, but I doubt he is the strongest humanity has to offer. I wonder why he came all the way over here? He claimed that I was 'terrorizing' a village near here, but I suspect that if I stopped culling monsters the denser mana here would provoke quick growth throughout the local populations.
However, while thinking on this I was suddenly interrupted by the invader charging forward, his strangely sized sword held behind and to his side. "Enough stalling for time, Payrontu of Sloth! You will die by my blade!"
