Klaus chased the woman in the direction she had fled, and Emily soon followed. The woman climbed into a dilapidated car and attempted to drive away, but Klaus yanked her out of the driver's seat.
Klaus led the woman to the back door of the ice-cream parlor, where she sat huddled on the floor, her head bowed, muttering to herself.
"I'm sorry, it's not my fault," the woman's voice trembled. "Please forgive me, Luna Diane."
Emily gazed at the woman before her, and for the second time, she heard her mother's name from a stranger. The woman must know her mother, but why was the woman so terrified at the mere mention of Emily's mother?
"Hey, Judy," Emily glanced at the name on the badge pinned to the woman's chest. "Lift your head and look at me."
"No, no," the woman, Judy, shook her head frantically; she dared not meet Emily's gaze.
