Max's brain was almost steaming while thinking about how to prevent this potentially catastrophic lunch with Dr. Snow.
Lunches at work are one thing, Liz told him that they are in the cafeteria, surrounded by coworkers. But if that doctor manages to become a part of her life outside work, his danger level will increase several folds. Then he can take her somewhere private and get plenty of chances to make his move on Liz. Getting their first outing with her friends is a perfect coverup for his intentions. Sneaky doctor!
The fact that Dr. Snow invited Liz for a lunch and then some activity on a Saturday, confirmed to Max what he already suspected: the snobby doctor is after Elizabeth.
Max's thoughts were interrupted by Liz coming out of her room.
She glanced at everyone present and based on their expressions, understood that Max answered whatever questions they had because no one looked at her teasingly.
Max saw Liz's smile and she looked great in yoga pants and a t-shirt. She looks great in anything, even in his t-shirt which fits her like a baggy minidress.
Her smile lit up the room, and Max's heart as well.
He patted a spot next to him on the sofa. "I saved you a seat."
Liz can see that there is plenty of seating available in the room, especially because Mia, Bri and Quentin are sitting on the fluffy carpet… but she didn't want to bring that up. She hopped on the sofa next to Max and lifted her legs sideways, slightly below her.
Max handed Liz her coffee. "Tell me what you want, and I will get it for you…", he gestured toward the table filled with breakfast items.
Olivia watched Max getting all mushy around Liz while getting her pastries and she rolled her eyes. She can see that he is trying around Liz, but she still believes that Max is not good enough for her friend. He is a player who hurt her once, and there is nothing to stop him from doing it again, except for Olivia.
After what seemed like forever, Quentin went to use the restroom.
Max waited two minutes and headed to the side hallway where the restroom is.
As soon as Quentin stepped out, Max pulled him to the side.
"Q, I need your help."
Quentin smirked. "With…?"
Max was not in the mood for games. He is running out of time! "Don't play. We need to stop the girls from going to that lunch."
"How do you expect me to perform that miracle?"
Max shoved his hand into his hair nervously. "I don't know… we have about one hour left."
Quentin rolled his eyes. "Don't make it sound so dramatic."
"Dramatic? You are aware that Bri is going also? You will lose your chance to spend time with her for the rest of the day. Tomorrow she is going back to New York. And what if she fancies that doctor? What if he brings friends because he knows that Liz is bringing hers?"
Quentin frowned.
"A-ha… now you see my point!", Max exclaimed confidently. He knows that he got Quentin's attention.
…
In the living room…
As soon as Max was out of the earshot, Olivia, Mia and Bri looked at Liz intently.
Liz realized that Max was like a shield who prevented these three girls to question her.
"What?", Liz asked reluctantly.
"Are you guys still playing the gay game?", Olivia asked.
"No. I know that he is not gay."
Mia stopped chewing out of curiosity. "How do you know that?"
Liz remembered Max on top of her, telling her things that involved devouring and passion and the heat invaded her cheeks again.
The girls didn't miss that Liz blushed in an instant.
Olivia pointed at Liz's red cheeks. "You are denying that anything happened between the two of you?"
After few seconds of silence, Bri asked: "You know that he is pursuing you, right?"
Liz exhaled. "OK. Stop. Nothing physical happened. We talked. He said that he is interested in me…" Well, in a way he did say that he is interested in her.
All three girls leaned closer while anticipating Liz to continue.
"And? What did you say?", Mia asked when she saw that Liz does not plan to say more by herself.
"I said that I'm glad that he can be honest with me."
"And?", Bri probed further.
Liz shrugged. "Nothing. That's it. Should there be something else?"
Mia was not sure if she should laugh or cry. "Liz, that is so… you."
Liz looked at her three friends with confusion apparent on her face. "I don't get it."
Bri patted Liz's hand and explained: "When a guy tells you that he is interested in you, you should tell him if it's mutual or not."
Liz frowned while thinking about her conversation with Max. "But he didn't ask any questions."
Olivia pinched the roof of her nose. She knew that Liz is inexperienced, but this… "If he asked, what would you say?"
"I didn't think about it. I…" Liz exhaled. "I'm having a good time with him. And he is nice to me. Does it need to be anything more than that?"
"You plan to keep him in the friendzone?", Mia asked.
Liz felt that her head is buzzing. "Friendzone? I didn't think about it one way or the other. As I said, I'm having a good time with him. If things progress further than that, it should be something that happens naturally. Not because you said 'yes' or 'no' like flipping a switch."
Bri grinned while feeling that they are onto something. Is it possible that the career focused Elizabeth Williams is considering a romantic relationship? "So, you are not opposed to dating Max?"
"Uhm…" Liz was unsure how to answer this. She really-really didn't think about it. Is this something you need to think about in advance? Isn't love something that happens suddenly, comes without any warning and makes you act silly? What about the spring breeze and birds chirping and pink hearts everywhere…?
…
In the hallway…
Quentin was rubbing his chin. "M, I'm drawing blanks. The challenge is too much for us to handle."
"Q, are you saying that we should give up and let the girls go and spend the rest of the day without us? What if he seizes the opportunity and invites them for dinner as well? Or for a night out? What about us? I don't know about you and Bri, Q… but I can't be just friends with Liz. I need us to be more than that."
"Friends…", Quentin mused. "A girl can have many friends, but only one boyfriend."
"Your point?"
Quentin nodded faintly while an idea was shaping up into a plan. "Instead of blocking him, how about we help him be friends with the girls?"
Max didn't get it. "How?"
"We need to join that lunch. And use every opportunity to point out how he is a good friend."
Max snapped his fingers and nodded in agreement. "If you can't defeat them, join them."
A second later, Max's mood fell. "How will we do that?"
"Olivia." Quentin gave Max a knowing look.
Max rejected that idea. How can Olivia help them? "She hates me and how much I've seen, she does not like you either."
Quentin agreed. "True… but did you think why? She thinks that we are players. What if there is a good-looking guy who has a clean past?"
Max's eyes lit up and Quentin knew that his best friend got an idea. The two of them together can solve any problem. Sabotaging a lunch should be a piece of cake. However, getting Olivia to cooperate sounds impossible…
