Chapter 4: Summoners

A Summoner?

Kennen was obviously happy to have obtained power now but it was quite different from what his other two friends got, his was more like a class than an augment like his friends.

He also didn't know what to think of a summoner. He always had been more of a leather class type of guy than a cloth class type of guy. But now, he seemed to be a cloth type.

Kennen tried to think what a summoner entailed since it was rarely seen class in game or novel, people generally preferred another version of it, the necromancer.

Summoners were definitely squishier than a necromancer as summoners were considered as having weak defense even among caster. They had one the lowest physicals but made up for their high magical stats, however there was no stats panel that could indicate that here.

Summoners certainly have more diversity since the necromancers only summoned the undead but as for which had more firepower, he wasn't so sure.

Everything would depend on what the summoner summoned, in a sense the class was quite one-dimensional as it was only and all about the summons, which also meant that the summoner itself would be quite weak but this was still a class that was classified as a one man army.

In the end, it would depend on what unit Kennen would be able to summon but he was still satisfied by the class he received, at least it wasn't something he disliked like the shield knight.

"Hey, you alright? What did you get?"

Kennen was woken up from his thoughts by Frank.

"Summoner. Apparently, I can summon a magical creature as a guard."

"Nice! much better than what I have, maybe you'll be able to solo a monster by yourself, unlike me." Frank laughed.

"Not exactly solo since it'll be two versus one and I'll probably do nothing in the entirety of the fight." He laughed with him.

"Damn, summoning is noice!!" Enzo said with Evan nodding in agreement.

"Hey, the crystal is forming." Rafael pulled everyone's attention on that as he came up after seeing the fight was over.

It took a few seconds for the crystal to form on top of the wolf's body.

"Why is there only one?" Rafael asked.

Kennen also thought the same as they all saw that the wolf ate or absorbed another red crystal just a few minutes ago.

"Maybe this crystal counts for two?" Kennen theorized but he was unsure. After all, none of them knew how this worked.

"That's a bummer." Enzo muttered and reached for the crystal.

"What are you doing?" Rafael quickly stopped him.

"Taking the crystal to absorb it obviously." Enzo replied as if this was the obvious next step.

"What about me then?" Rafael looked at the crystal longingly.

"Well, you'll get the next one. I would've let you this one if you helped kill the wolf but you preferred to guard the stairs so the crystal should naturally go to me, right?" Enzo asked but he wasn't.

Kennen and his other two friends also agreed that this crystal should be given to Enzo.

Rafael also didn't fight it with everyone else on the same opinion.

With that decided, Enzo touched the crystal and started the process.

"Don't feel so down Raffy, with four of us having powers, it'll be easy for us to hunt down a monster and get a crystal for you." Evan consoled Rafael.

Rafael just gave him a nod.

It didn't take long before Enzo was done with the crystal and read the panel.

"I'm an archer now?" Enzo said hesitantly, "I can create a bow made of magic and arrows as long as I have energy, but how can I know how much energy I have?"

Enzo closed his eyes and then a little translucent blue bow with a length of around 1 meter appeared on his left hand. He then aimed the bow toward the wolf's corpse and an arrow that seemed to be made with the same stuff as the bow formed as he drew the bow.

He shot the arrow on the corpse and only the arrow only made it around 5 cm deep.

"I guess you'll know when you start feeling tired." Evan said, "I also got tired when I used my power too long previously."

With Enzo demonstrating his powers, everyone turned their eyes toward Kennen. He guesses it was his turn now.

Kennen also closed his eyes and started to pull a string he felt when he received his powers. It was like a macro he suddenly got as he didn't even need to chant or do anything except pulling.

That macro did everything for him as he felt his energy being drained from him and a magic circle suddenly appeared in front of him and in the corridor.

The magic circle lit up and three figures enveloped in light slowly came out of it and as the light dissipated, three green figures appeared.

A blue panel appeared on Kennen's vision.

[Goblins Javelineer: Goblins that know how to throw javelin pretty nicely.]

The three goblins were all looking at him with a smile. The surprising thing was they had nice white teeth.

Those goblins didn't look like those ugly goblins that liked to r*pe people in those manga. Actually, they looked quite friendly and even good with that nice smile and lush green skin. They were around 150 cm tall with brown pants and brown boots, nude torso with a quill strapped with javelin at their backs.

There was a period of silence as none of them expected gobliins as summons.

"Uh… nice? We have three more fighters now…" Evan said.

"They look way too nice to be goblins…" Enzo was still dumbfounded.

"GAH!" "Kek!" "Kuh!" The goblins spoke up and waved their hands.

Kennen didn't know their languages but could understand that they were greeting him. Maybe this was the connection between the summons and summoner.

After the initial shock of the goblins wore off, Kennen took a look at his surroundings and specifically the dead man.

It was a gruesome sight as the man at his throat ripped open and his face mauled by the demonic wolf. His stomach started to churn at the sight of it.

"What are we going to do with the corpses?" Kennen asked his friends.

"What else other than leaving them here?" Evan said.

"It will rot and start stinking, let alone the risk of disease." Rafael stated.

"Let's burn them then." Kennen proposed.

"We'll do it on the roof after we're done searching the hotel and getting some oil from the kitchen to do that." Frank said.

"Alright, let's move them to the room."

Kennen ordered the goblins to move the dead man and the mini cyclop into the room where the wolf was. They paid respect to the dead man and wished him a peaceful afterlife before they left for the upper floors.

"Let's keep searching the remaining floor, maybe we'll find the crystal that Rafael wants so much." Evan teased.

Rafael just flipped the bird at him.

They searched the eighth floor, the ninth floor and the tenth floor but there was nothing, even the rooftop was searched but still nothing.

"So what now? We already searched every floor." Enzo asked.

"I guess we go back down and make sure no new monster popped on the floor. Then we see if we can secure the ground floor." Kennen proposed.

Kennen still remembered how tough those two pig orcs looked but with four of them having ability now, they should be able to beat them if they coordinated and planned well.

"I guess that's the move, the food is on the ground floor too." Frank expressed his approval.

During their trip down and another check to each floor if there were new monsters popping up and good guy Frank telling the other occupant of the hotel that the hotel was safe except the ground floor, they also realized that they would have to close out any entrance of the hotel, lest any monster would just swag in.

This was a problem they would have to take care of after they were done scouting the ground floor so they could see how many monsters they had to deal with there. Moreover, Kennen and his friends were starting to feel hungry so wouldn't mind taking a bite too.

On the ground floor, they cautiously made their way toward the buffet hall with Evan leading the way and the goblins guarding their back.

They could hear some little noises coming from far away outside of the hotel but nothing that could tell them that someone was near them.

Kennen and his friends made it to the buffet hall and saw nobody here. After making sure it was safe, they started to eat the food that was still there.

The food was cold but this was generally expected from a buffet, let alone after the world turned to hell.

"Let's eat the foods that spoil faster first. " Frank advised.

Everyone else nodded and started to eat and hydrate themselves.

Kennen looked out of the window and saw a few pig orcs as well as demonic wolves roaming but no people or any sign of the military.

He pulled the curtain and motionned his friends to do the same. The last thing he wanted was to attract more monsters now.

As they were talking about how to close the hotel entrance due to it seemingly having no door, a pack of four wolves walked into the buffet while they hadn't finished eating yet.

"Can't catch a f*cking break."

Kennen cursed under his breath.

He was feeling quite tired after walking up and down the stairs and summoning the goblins.

Evan stood at the front with Frank one step behind while Kennen was at the back with Enzo and Rafael with the goblins in front of him.

"Well, your time to shine big boy, you hunted three of them by yourself once."

"Shut up Raffy, it was one by one, not four at the same time." Evan retorted as he and Frank grabbed the knives.

Enzo manifested his bow and drew an arrow, ready to shoot at any time.

"Don't go charging alone Evan, stand on our ground." Frank warned.

"Got it, cap."

"Enzo and Kennen, try getting them from afar."

"Fire!" Kennen ordered the goblin javelineers.

Enzo also fired his arrow but they all missed with the wolves jumping back or sideways.

This also prompted them to stop staring and growling as they charged together.

Frank and Evan drew the attention of one each while the other charged for the back line.

The approaching wolves flustered Enzo as he missed his second shot and tried to quickly recover to shoot a third time.

The three goblins decided to focus on a single wolf. A first javelin was thrown and forced the wolf to step sideways but then another two came and hit true, not giving it any time to dodge.

The two javelins didn't go very deep but it was enough to make the wolf wobble.

However, the second wolf came charging in hot. The goblins or Enzo didn't have to stop it as it went for Enzo. But, the wolf probably didn't expect to have hot sauce thrown at him right into his face by Rafael.

The spices burned its eyes, which stopped its momentum, giving ample time for Enzo to take aim and shoot an arrow at the wolf and the three goblins skew the wolf with three more javelins. The other wolf was soon taken care of by the goblin too.

Meanwhile, Frank's agility allowed him to dodge and dance around his opponent but his lack of power on his knife stabs only made superficial wounds, which just enraged the wolf more.

But he bought enough time for Evan to finish his wolf with his same strategy of tanking the bite with the hardened arm, strike the wolf's eyes to destabilize it and then finish it off with multiple hardened strikes.

With his opponent dealt with, Evan went to help Frank and the two easily dealt with the remaining wolf.

"Thanks for the hot sauce, Raf, that probably saved my life." Enzo thanked Rafael.

"What do you mean probably?" Rafael incredulously said.

As Kennen and his friends rejoiced at their victory, he suddenly heard a roar. It didn't sound far from where he was at. The roar sounded like it came from a pig monster.
