Chapter 04

A Simple Fisherman in RWBY

Chapter 04:

- Argenti Ovans –

"Hey, Grandpa Max!" I shouted as I finished fishing for regular fish and exited my secret spot. As I returned home, I saw him. It looks like he was also preparing to leave the fishing spot.

"Oh! Young Argenti—What's that thing on your head?" asked Grandpa Max as he was completely confused by Mudkip, who decided to sit on my head.

"… That's Mudkip! I found him when I was fishing in my secret stuff!" I smiled as I took Mudkip from my head and showed him Grandpa Max. "Isn't he cute?"

Grandpa Max touched his beard as he observed the confused Mudkip. He glanced at me, then stretched his hand to rub Mudkip's head, who cried out happiness. "You are right, lad, he is adorable.."

"Still better than those fucking Grimm! I still never knew other creatures than Grimm could exist…" He gave me a surprised look as he became excited. "Do you think there's another one at your spot?"

"Ah, why?"

"I want to find one for my granddaughter, you know? The one you always escaped when I tried to introduce her to you." Said Grandpa Max as he gave me a look.

I looked everywhere but him. "What? Me? Escaping? Nah, can't be me."

"Right, right, anyway, come with me since we are leaving." Said Grandpa Max. He tapped my shoulder, and he took his fishing gear with him. We walked briefly as we were getting close to the marketplace in Patch, where you could find various businesses. I also came here in the past to sell some of my fishing. I briefly remembered renting a spot inside the marketplace for another three months. The price was not bad and was affordable since I was a local, so I enjoyed a nice discount.

"You know, lad. I know I'm late, but I don't recall you having a basket of fruit with you this morning. Did you get it somewhere?" asked Grandpa Max as he looked at the berries curiously.

"Oh, these? There are various berries I found on my way toward my secret place. Here, have a try of this blue one. I called them Oran berries, and they taste really sweet." I smiled and gave him an Oran berry.

If possible, I want to sell them in the future, and it would be very informative if these berries matched the taste of some locals in Patch. As for the other part of the world? That's way too soon for me right now, and it's not like I need money.

Grandpa Max carefully observed the Oran berry in his hand. He took a bite of the berry, and his eyes popped widely. "OH MY GOD! Lad! Those Oran berries of yours taste AMAZING!"

He quickly ate the rest and then rubbed his stomach with satisfaction. "I don't know if I'm overthinking, but I feel more… energetic or less tired than usual." He quickly ran and jumped around to demonstrate his newfound prowess. I looked at him with curiosity and began to think about the effect. I knew for a fact that Grandpa Max didn't have his aura unlocked, but when I ate the Oran berry, the effects were minor compared to Grandpa Max's.

How curious...

"Now I'm very interested in the taste of the rest of them…" muttered Grandpa Max, looking at the rest of the berries passionately. "Are you planning to sell them in the future?"

I nodded. "Yep! That's the plan, and that's also why I'm going to Auntie Sarah's shop before going home!"

"Hoh… That's great. If you had to ask someone to help you, then that girl Sarah is your best bet. You better grow them soon, lad! I would love to eat more of them in the future!" said Grandpa Max admiringly as he patted my back.

"Of course! I'll also give you a discount!"

"Hahaha, I knew I liked you for a reason, boy… How about you meet my little granddaughter—" said Grandpa Max seriously, but I immediately skedaddled away.

"Wait! Come back, boy—"

"Sorry! But I have something to do, Grandpa Max! See you tomorrow!" I shouted as I quickly made my way toward the shop.

"Thank you for coming, Argenti! I'm looking forward to purchasing your berries~" said Miss Sarah as she waved me goodbye.

I waved goodbye to her, holding a bag filled with farming-related stuff. Unfortunately, I couldn't bring everything with me, like the clay pots I ordered, but Auntie told me I could get them by this evening or tomorrow morning. I'm also pretty much done with my daily touch grass quota, so I was planning to hide myself in my home.

Of course, life wasn't easy and would often throw us a curveball like me right now. I was a little annoyed or Irritated.

As for why…?

"Ah! Lilie was right! Big brother Argen has a cute pet!" shouted a little girl as her cry successfully attracted various children on my way. While I wouldn't say I liked this much attention, my Mudkip adored it as he legitimately jumped inside the crowd as everyone kept feeding him snacks or rubbing him right.

"Woah! So cute!"

"Big bro Argen, where did you get him!?"

"Let me hug him!"

"What is this big bro?"

"What's his name?"

I swallowed my saliva as I saw even more people coming toward me, and then I looked at the other kids who were still surrounding my Mudkip. What a drag... But those kids in this town are very stubborn and won't let me go easily if I don't entertain them for a bit.

I looked around to find a way to escape until I almost cursed out loud when I saw some adults approaching me…! It's time to act now, or I won't be able to leave this place in the following hours."Ahem," I cleared my throat as it caught the kids' attention. "Well, you know kids…"

I blinked my right eye rapidly to signal my Mudkip that It was time to leave, but that little shit completely ignored me and kept eating the snacks brought by the kids.

'this little shit…' I thought mentally with annoyance as my left eye twitched for real.

I sighed and knew I couldn't escape. I might as well accept my fate, and I knew they meant well since I know most of them. Patch was, after all, a small place, and you were bound to know everyone at some point. "… He is Mudkip and my partner... I just met him this morning when I went fishing."

"Wow!"

 -X-X-X-

So yeah, I spent the next hours entertaining the crowd and saw many people taking pictures of Mudki, but I didn't stop them either. I wouldn't be shocked if Mudkip was trending like crazy on the internet at some point since, in Remnant, there weren't many cute creatures like my baby.

I hope I won't attract the wrong type of people to my door tomorrow morning because of Mudkip, but I think I should be fine... Please don't let it bite me in the ass later. So yeah, after I left the marketplace, I immediately took the path home as I didn't want to attract anyone anymore, and I also had a very low battery on my socials.

I don't want to touch grass anymore...

It took me a few minutes, but I was finally home with all my stuff and felt even more tired than usual. I was ready to stay inside my house for the next few days, but that wasn't possible since my semblance became a much higher priority that I couldn't simply ignore because of my whim.

I unlocked the door of my house as Mudkip quickly jumped off my head and went alone inside. I guess he wants to explore his new house. I sighed tiredly and closed the door behind me. I entered the living room and dropped everything on the floor. "Ahhh~"

I didn't expect to be this mentally drained from a simple trip and felt miserable. I shook my head as I entered the kitchen and grabbed a cold soda. I returned to the living room and drank it as my gaze locked on the bucket of water full of fish.

I honestly forgot about them with the numerous items I brought back home. I also started to feel a little hungry as I rubbed my stomach. I looked at the clock fixed on my wall and made a decision. "Mudkip! We are going out!" I shouted as I stood up from the couch and stretched.

"Mudkip!" shouted my Pokémon as he returned to me in a few seconds. I smiled and rubbed his little head. "Come on, I'll introduce you to my neighbours and friends, and I'm sure they'll love you. We will also eat there."

Mudkip's eyes shined as he heard food. "Mudkip~"

I smiled as I took the bucket. Mudkip followed me behind as we left the house on foot since my neighbours were only a few steps away from my home.

 -X-X-X-

I stood before my neighbour's door, lost in thought. Over the years, I often dropped by after my fishing trip. I became familiar with the family when I attended Signal Academy, where two of them were professors. After that, I became friends with the kids in the household over time. I want to think we were close.

"Mudkip, we're going to meet some friends of mine, so I need you to be on your best behaviour, okay?" I spoke to my Mudkip, who stood faithfully at my feet. Mudkip pondered my words, nodding in understanding. "Mudkip."

I nodded with a smile, then knocked at the door and patiently waited, but not even a minute passed when I heard a familiar youthful voice on the other side of the door.

"Hello? Who is it?" asked a young girl that I quickly recognized.

"It's me, Ruby."

"OH!"

I heard the exclamation from Ruby's voice as she quickly unlocked the door. The door soon opened, and I saw the short girl. Of course, I didn't hesitate to greet the girl. "Hey Ruby, I—"

"Where is he!?" cried Ruby as she interrupted me and looked around until she spotted Mudkip on the ground. I could practically feel her excitement radiating off her body and the starstruck in her eyes as she stared intensely at Mudkip.

Mudkip, who was used to such a look at this point, cooly nodded. "Mudkip"

"OMYGOSHOMYGOSHOMYGOSH! HE IS SO ADORABLE!" exclaimed Ruby as she picked up Mudkip from the ground in her arms. Then she instinctively used her super speed semblance to return inside the house and left me alone outside, frozen in place.

"MY BABY!"
