I died.

It was unexpected. A freak accident. One moment Alexander was climbing a tree to pick the juiciest apple from the orchard, and the next he was standing at the gates of Elysium.

"Umm..excuse me. Do you mind telling me how I ended up here?"

A man dressed in a white robe stood outside the gates with a very pleasant look on his face. He held a large leather book in his hands that looked like it could have been at least 50 lbs.

"Oh, welcome sir! Yes, if you could please give me your name, I would be more than happy to help you out." He said with a smile on his face.

"My name is Alexander."

"Okay great, let's see here..Alexander.."

He fished a pair of spectacles out of his robe and started flipping through that book with shocking ease.

"Here we are. Alexander. Oh my, yes this happens more often than you would think, but you fell out of that apple tree and broke your neck….wait, umm, that doesn't seem right.."

'How could I be that stupid?!' Alexander thought to himself. 'I'm one of the strongest men in my city, and I fall to my death while picking apples?!' It was almost too ridiculous to believe.

"Wow. Okay, thank you, I guess? Hold on, what do you mean 'that doesn't seem right?'"

"You're quite welcome, and I mean that I seem to remember you having a different death.."

He flipped to the back of the large book, gave it a quick scan, and slammed it shut again.

"Just as I thought. You were not supposed to die like that, so it truly was a freak accident. I'm sorry, but you won't be allowed in at this time, you'll have to go back."

"What do you mean I won't be allowed in?" Alexander asked through gritted teeth.

"Well, since you died unexpectedly today, you were never able to complete the mission that fate had for you. If you'd like to be allowed in, you'll need to complete the mission before returning here."

"How do I fix this problem?! I belong behind those golden gates! For someone like me, the mortal world was never a place where I felt like I belonged. Everything was always so perfect, nothing exciting ever happened, I was bored out of my mind."

"I'm sorry, but I really don't have the authority to give you all of the details, and I'm quite busy. You'll just have to go back and figure it out yourself."

Alexander was starting to get annoyed. "And how may I ask do I 'go back'?"

"Oh that's quite simple. I'll send you back right now. As long as you follow what fate originally had for you, and don't die again before you've fixed this problem, you'll be welcomed in with opened arms. Though, I must warn you: as soon as you've brought about what was originally supposed to happen, you'll be snatched right back up here."

And with a snap of the man's two fingers, Alexander was back on earth, standing right in the middle of that apple orchard.
