Chapter 20

Johanna's POV

Johanna and Gale tried to come up with a plan what to say when they knock on the door to the person living in any of the houses around.

"What if they won't let us? Or if the person inside is someone we can't trust?" Gale asked and Johanna wrinkled her forehead.

"I don't know, but if we don't do anything soon they might find us" she said and tried to decide what house they should knock on.

Gale mumbled something and Johanna rolled her eyes. When she looked at the street a car drove by with a slow speed. She immediately knew that car. She started running after it which took Gale off guard and they almost fell since they still were cuffed.

"Wait!!" Johanna shouted and the car stopped with a small screech from the wheels.

Johanna dragged Gale with her and together they ran to the car. She opened the back door and jumped in, pulling Gale after her.

"Go!" Johanna said trying to catch her breath and the car started moving.

"What happened?" Alexis asked from the front seat.

"It's a long story but you should take us to the precinct so mom and dad won't get think we're still in danger" Johanna said and looked out the window behind her.

Alexis agreed and started driving towards the precinct. Johanna could feel her gaze in the mirror and understood there was something she wanted to ask but didn't know how to ask carefully. Johanna met her gaze and tried with her own eyes ask what it was. Alexis' eyes turned to the road but soon she couldn't keep quiet anymore.

"Why are you two in cuffs?" Alexis finally said.

Johanna looked down at her right hand which was cuffed to Gale's left hand.

"Umm... we were kidnapped, or... was kidnapped, I was nosy and got caught" Johanna said and when she got Alexis 'what have I told you'-look she grinned with her 'forgive me' eyes.

"Johanna..." Alexis started with a lecturing voice.

"I know, you don't have to tell me. Mom and dad caught me this time" Johanna mumbled.

Alexis raised her eyebrows.

"Didn't I teach you how to sneak? Was I that bad if a teacher?" she asked with a small disappointment in her voice.

"No, it wasn't the sneaking that gave me away. I found a key and couldn't keep my mouth shut" Johanna explained and remembered how Alexis had taught her how to sneak in case they should play laser tag with their dad some time.

Alexis had let Johanna borrow her gear just to make sure she knew how to sneak even with one of those on her. The funny part was that without knowing it at that moment Alexis also taught her how to sneak behind her parents without them notcing her being there and by that helped her sneaking into crime scenes when they were working. Alexis had seen her do it once. She had gotten to the crime scene cause Lanie needed help with something and asked her to help her. When Alexis had gone to go get something she had come across Johanna's hiding spot. Johanna had been frightened that her sister would tell on her, probably that's what Alexis had seen in her eyes so she had smiled at her and quickly gone back to Lanie. After that Alexis had visited Johanna one day after school and lectured her how dangerous it could be and how mad her parents would be if they found out. Johanna had begged her sister not to tell anyone and she had agreed, she didn't want to be the one telling since she thought Johanna herself should come clean.

"Well, maybe it was for the best they found out. You shouldn't be doing that, not even from the start" Alexis said and slowed down the speed to turn into the garage of the precinct.

The guard there recognized her and let her through.

"But I don't want to stop, I want to continue investigate, it's fun and interesting" Johanna said and Gale couldn't help but make a sound.

When Johanna looked at him she could see he had tears in her eyes and she understood he had missunderstood her.

"No, I don't mean it like that, you know, not fun like that, it's horrible, but please, you know what I mean, right?" she tried and he nodded.

He understood but it ddn't hurt less for that. She could see that in his eyes. She tried hugging him even though they were in cuffs plus sat in a car. Alexis turned off the engine and jumped out the car.

"Let's go get those handcuffs off you two" she said and the three of them went to the elevator and pushed the button to were their favorite cops had their desks.
