A D&D Wizard in DC

Alexzander is your not-so-average nobody. He wakes up, goes to work, comes home, and sleeps. Only the occasional superhero battle breaks his days of mediocracy. Then one day everything changes. Suddenly he gained the ability to cast magic and not just any magic. No, he gained the spells and abilities of a high-level magic caster from D&D. Not only that but he gained the ability to use powerful rituals. However, life won't be easy for Alexzander as old wounds from a past best-forgotten open. ...... This fanfic is a slow burn. So don't expect major plot points to happen quickly. Additionally, this is kind of my " Don't think too hard about it fic", so don't expect a masterpiece. Also, the Cover Pic isn't mine.

First Missions Don't always go Bad.

A/n: Just for future reference, Alex, on the subject of his own capabilities and whatnot, is at best an unreliable narrator. At worst he's completely underselling/underestimating or even ignorant of his own power( As in how powerful the effect would be, what an effect would truly entail, or other uses of a spell. A good example is {Prestidigitation}, it seems useless, be it'd be invaluable in cleaning up crime scenes. ). Not to mention he's prone to mistakes due to his various issues, and the fact he's inexperienced.

Just keep that in mind for future chapters, as he will make mistakes, some small, others not so much. Also, the character isn't a super genius, he's above average, but he isn't Lex Luthor.

Finally, for those unacquainted with D&D, there are nine tiers of magic. First tier is basic stuff like {Magic Missile}, which shoots small missile-like objects at someone that does a little damage. While Ninth tier is stuff like {Time Stop} and {Meteor Storm}, one stops time the other summons meteors, nuff said. Though the lines blur when you add in stuff like Metamagic which can enhance lower-tier Spells to higher levels, or in the case of Alex, if you were to overcharge the magic with more energy than needed.

Now onto the story!

~ Gotham: Monday, 8:30 pm~

It was a week later that I stood before the jewelry store that I'd be robbing. Scoping out the place and compensating for work schedules and other variables took a surprising amount of time. That and working up the nerve to rob the place took a while.

' Technically I don't need to do anything. I could just summon a monster specialized in stealth and have them rob the store.'

But that didn't sit right with me.

'If I'm going to bring down the Court of Owls I can't hesitate with these things. If I sit back and allow my monsters to do everything, I'll lack the necessary experience to deal with actual issues and threats.' I thought with a frown while scanning my surroundings once more.

The jewelry store was in a more desolate part of Gotham with significantly less traffic than the rest of the city. The area was fairly desolate too. It was a perfect target for his first heist.

Looks-wise, the store wasn't anything special. It was situated in a newer building that was dyed in various hues of gray. On top of it, a sign read " Macy's Jewelry Shop".

Its security system was decent. It is protected by up-to-date locks and alarm systems, including a motion one.

I had been observing the building for a couple of hours now from my position up top a bundling not far from it. The shop Normally closes around 6:30, though sometimes it stays open later than that. Fortunately, it was one of those days.

By the time the single employee that worked the shop today closed and locked up, it was night. Giving me another layer of protection from prying eyes.

Watching as the employee, whose name I learned was David, get in his car and drive off I mentally prepared myself for what I needed to do.

" It's okay Alex you've prepared for this. You practiced relentlessly for this exact moment. All You need to do is take that final of faith." I whispered to myself.

I hadn't just been scoping out potential targets during my week of investigations. Additionally, I had been practicing magic control extensively.

' As of yesterday, I can cast 1-3rd level non-combative spells easily enough. 4th is doable but I need to be careful lest I overcharge them. ' I reminded myself as I walked to the edge of the building I stood on.

Looking down at my target I took one last deep breath of air before steeling my resolve. Like always a wave of calm washed over me as my grip over my emotions tightened.

My gaze, now more impassive, locked onto the inside of the shop.

Then, in order, I cast {Greater Invisibility}, an overcharged (3rd level) version of {Pass Without Trace}, and {Dimension Door}.

Suddenly I'm no longer on top of a building but inside the Jewelry shop.

After shaking away the temporary disorientation that came with using {Dimension Door} I gave a glanced around the shop.

The shop was as nice looking as one would expect from an establishment like this. The walls were painted a delightful sky blue, cases filled with jewelry of all kinds lined the walls, and the floor was made of smooth marble.

' I don't think I've actually been in one of these.' I mused silently to myself before I began moving.

Knowing I couldn't be seen and my motion was hidden by {Pass without a trace}, I stroll over to one of the many booths in the shop and behold my prize. Two scarlet red rubies embed into a golden bracelet lined with diamonds.

It was quite a beautiful item and by far the most expensive one here. It's worth over thirty thousand dollars.

It was at this point, however, that most newer thieves would encounter a problem.

The booth that held the bracelet was far more secure than the rest of the store. Its case being made of ballistic glass, and an electric lock that requires a code.

Thankfully because of my magic it was a non-issue.

Waving my hand I cast {Knock} and watch as the previously secure case the rubies lay in opened at my prompting.

Quickly I stuff the bracelet in a pouch I had on my person before turning to leave.

Only to stop as I realized something.

' Do I really only want to take the rubies' I thought as I looked at the numerous other gems locked away in cases.

This wasn't just me being greedy either. If I only took this single bracelet it would look incredibly suspicious. More so than just taking a bunch of them.

Weighing my options eventually I decided against it. I don't need anything else but these two rubies, plus the diamond lining it would work for a few more catalysts if needed.

With my decision made I {Dimension Doored} back to my position on top of the building nearby.

Letting out a breath of air I pulled out the bracelet and ran a bit of electricity through it via low-powered {Shocking Grasp}.

Then, just as I expected, I heard the sound of an electrical device sputter and die.

' Tracking device' I think.

I wasn't sure if a dingy shop like this would use such things but it was better to be safer than sorry.

Glancing at the shop one last time I begin my trek home.
