James gathered her into his arms as soon as he saw the fear in her eyes.
"Hey, I did not mean to scare you," James said, in a whisper.
Though he had no idea what was upsetting Abby, he never meant to frighten her in that way. All he wanted was for his wife to playfully engage with him.
On the other hand, Abby became aware that what she was doing was unsettling James, so she began to calm down and then embraced him.
"James, why is it that you don't want kids right now?" Her sudden remark caught James off guard and he quickly pulled back.
With expectant eyes, Abby looked at him, and the longer he stayed silent, the more her heart sank.
In an attempt to elicit a response from him, she continued, "You know having kids early is better than having no kids."
She would wonder why she was showing no signs of bearing James' child, even after spending so much time in his physical company.
