The sharp ring of the university bell jolted Zoe from her thoughts, pulling her attention back to the front of the class. The professor, already halfway through erasing the board, turned back to the students with a practiced smile. "That's all for today. We'll pick up from here next week. Have a good day."

Zoe sighed, closing her laptop and sliding it into her bag. The lecture had been a blur—she'd been physically present but mentally somewhere else entirely. Specifically, somewhere involving Allen and the promise of a "surprise" he'd mentioned yesterday. She hadn't heard a word from him since, and the silence was driving her crazy.

Her friend Dena, who'd been sitting beside her the whole time, let out an exaggerated groan as she gathered her own things. "Ugh, that was boring. Are you doing anything fun after this?"

Zoe blinked, snapping out of her daze. "Huh? I… I don't know."
