Like Baker's ex-wife in this instance or a famous example would be Sanji from One Piece, who had to endure his brother's beatings, dad's abuse and being powerless to be able to save his mother and then when he thought he escaped, he got shipwrecked/pirates and then starved on a empty island/rock. Like I am just saying when you are in that particular state, the person is more likely to lose his will to live but still holding on that small amt of hope to be able to survive. (At least that's what shown here and in most entertainment) if you get what I mean.
