Zara's phone buzzed. She knew it was Jake before she even looked. We need to talk.
Her heart skipped a beat. They'd been dancing around this conversation for days. She wasn't sure she was ready for the truth, but she couldn't avoid it forever.
She agreed to meet him in the park—somewhere away from prying eyes.
When Jake arrived, his usual cocky demeanor was replaced by something softer, almost regretful. His eyes locked onto hers, and Zara saw the familiar mix of guilt and desire. She hated how much she still wanted him.
Jake stepped closer, reaching out as if to comfort her, but she pulled back. "No. You've been keeping secrets from me, from the very beginning. What else have you been hiding?"
His face twisted with guilt. "I'm a part of the society, Zara. I was sent to watch over you... protect you, in a way. But I never wanted this. I never wanted to hurt you. The artifacts... they're dangerous, and I... I thought I was doing the right thing."
Zara's world crashed. Her breath caught in her throat. "So all this time... you've been lying to me? Using me?"
Jake shook his head, his voice pleading. "No, I wasn't using you. I—" He faltered, and for the first time, Zara saw him as something more than just a high school crush. She saw him as part of the very system she was fighting against.
"You should've told me the truth from the start, Jake," she whispered. "But now... I don't know who you are anymore."
"Zara, I... I never wanted to hurt you," Jake said, his voice low and hesitant.
"You already did," Zara replied, her voice steadier than she felt. "You lied to me, Jake. You let me fall for you while keeping so many secrets. What else haven't you told me?"
Jake took a step closer, his expression pleading. "I wasn't trying to use you, I swear. I was trying to protect you. The artifacts, your dad—they're all dangerous. I thought if I got close to you, I could keep you safe from all this... mess."
Zara's heart shattered as his words hit her. He'd been using her, even if he hadn't meant to. "I don't know if I can forgive you for this," she said softly.
For a moment, they just stood there, the air thick with tension. Then, before Zara could process what was happening, Jake's hand found hers.
Zara stiffened, but Jake didn't pull away. Instead, he leaned in, his voice barely a whisper. "I never wanted to hurt you, Zara. I don't know how to make this right, but I need you to know I care about you. I always have."
She stared up at him, her pulse racing. For a moment, she considered kissing him, letting go of everything that had happened between them. But then the memory of his lies came rushing back.
"No," she whispered, pulling her hand away. "You've done enough."
Jake's face fell, but he didn't argue.
Just as Zara turned to leave, she heard his voice again. "Zara, I... I think I'm falling for you."
Zara froze, her heart pounding. She wasn't sure if he was just saying that in the heat of the moment, or if it was real. But one thing was certain—she couldn't trust him yet
