Different Family Backgrounds

In the corner where the glass window meets the floor, Chu Yi Chen was sitting right there. Though there are lots of others in the area, Gu Xiao Xiao picked him out right away.

He wore a black suit with a white dress shirt. It was a simple and clean outfit but because he is wearing it, it looked so different and attention snatching.

The first time they met was in an awkward situation where Gu Xiao Xiao wanted very much to hide and so she couldn't really check him out. Last time at school, because Xiao Xi was there, she also didn't dare to look at Chu Yi Chen for too long, just in case Xiao Xi would notice something.

But now, she stood not far from him and gawked at him without shifting her gaze even a tiny bit.

His head was lowered and he was looking at some kind of document. There was a cup of coffee on the table and he was doing his own thing ignoring what was going on around him. Suddenly, as if he had felt something, he raised his head and looked in Gu Xiao Xiao's direction.

Gu Xiao Xiao had no time to hide and could only stand there dumbly and stare at him. Chu Yi Chen saw her frightened reaction and signaled for her to come chat.

To have been caught in the act, Gu Xiao Xiao had no choice but to go. She walked to Chu Yi Chen and asked in a soft voice, "Are you involved with my company's business?"

"Involved with the business? I guess so. Are you doing your internship here?"

"Yeah, I started not too long ago." Gu Xiao Xiao nodded and stared right into Chu Yi Chen's ocean deep eyes. After moments of hesitation, she finally mustered her courage and spoke. "When do you have time? Let's… let's get a divorce."

The moment Gu Xiao Xiao spoke, she felt coldness from Chu Yi Chen. Staring into his shiny but cold eyes, Gu Xiao Xiao felt her courage slip away.

"Is marriage a joke to you?" Chu Yi Chen looked at Gu Xiao Xiao expressionlessly and asked her in a low vice.

"No, that's not what I meant and that's not what I think." Gu Xiao Xiao was a little nervous, "But you are Xiao Xi's brother. I can't…"

"Can't what?" Looking at Gu Xiao Xiao, who stopped after making half her statement, Chu Yi Chen pursued.

Gu Xiao Xiao's thoughts were a little messy. She wasn't sure how to expression her real thoughts to Chu Yi Chen.

Though Chu Xiao Xi has never told her much about her family background, Gu Xiao Xiao could tell that she was from a completely different world.

Gu Xiao Xi speaks very authentic American English and grew up abroad. That was a fact everyone knows about. Gu Xiao Xiao on the other hand, was a poor student who earned a spot to study abroad but had no money to go through with it. Though there were other reasons, she was poor nonetheless. That was also a fact.

Because their names shared the character "Xiao", they started to chat and before they knew it, they became great friends. All these years, Chu Xiao Xi had helped out Gu Xiao Xiao a lot. Gu Xiao Xiao remembers all of it.

Gu Xiao Xiao doesn't want her to feel like she was a bird who wanted to reach high and become a phoenix and that was why she purposely got close to her family. This was why the whole situation between Chu Yi Chen and her made it difficult for her to know how to explain. She was even terrified that Chu Xiao Xi would find out.

"Our family backgrounds are too different. I am not good enough for you." Gu Xiao Xiao responded and lowered her head. In a voice that is almost too low for Chu Yi Chen to hear, she continued slowly, "Your family background is well-off right? If you are not a pimp, then you can find any girl you want. There is no need to waste your life with me."
