You Are What You Eat

As a Hunter, I must be strong. If I'm strong, then I'll be able to fight powerful Monsters. If I'm able to fight powerful Monsters, then I'll be able to receive a higher income. However, I've been weak for the past 4 years. I'll make sure that that changes. With this Skill that I've been granted, I'll change. It'll be tough, but I'll eat anything I have to to get stronger. I don't care if this Skill leads me to being some sort of monster or if this leads me to being hated. For the sake of my loved ones, I must be strong.

Shatter!

"Instant Motion," I muttered.

The next thing I knew, I was on the ground.

It was the middle of the night. I was currently in a park that was close to my apartment. I was testing out my new Skill, Instant Motion. It turns out that it's pretty hard to get used to.

I had just tried to use the Skill on my arm, but the momentum threw me to the ground. I let out a groan as I got back onto my feet.

I used the Skill on my arm once. Not only was my magic energy, the energy that was required to use magic and Skills, completely depleted, but my arm also ached a bit. When I used it, as the Skill's name suggests, my arm moved instantly. It moved so fast that I couldn't even see it.

I was here at the park because I wanted to test out my Skills. I wanted to practice and get used to them, but my Magic Stat is so measly that I'm not even able to use my Skills after using Instant Motion only one time.

Despite it being a D-Rank Skill, I know that Instant Motion can be an amazing Skill if I'm able to get enough practice with it. I guess it's D-Rank because of its difficulty to use. The problem is that I don't have enough Magic to properly practice.

"Maybe I can find someone with a magician Job and ask for a hair…," I murmured, "Wait… I don't know anyone besides Uma…"

I sighed depressingly at the realization that my only friend was Uma.

"I guess I'll have to go to a Yellow Dungeon," I said to myself.

Green and Blue Dungeons don't have many Monsters with very high Magic Stats. However, Yellow Dungeons, which are one step above Blue Dungeons, and up have more Monsters with higher Magic Stats.

I will definitely have more trouble in a Yellow Dungeon though… Maybe I should keep training in Green and Blue Dungeons.

I thought about it.

I've only had Envy of a Glutton for about a week. My Sanity is at 96% while my Humanity is at 93%. It went down by quite a lot just from the Crystal Bat's blood…

Now that I think about it, I only got Skills from the two Boss Monsters that I've fought. It could be a coincidence, but both of those times were also when I accidentally consumed blood and not a hair or a nail clipping.

It could be that what I get from my Skill depends on what part of the Monster I consume. When I was eating hair and nail clippings, I only got slight increases in my Stats, but when I drank the blood on accident, I got new Skills… I wonder what would happen if I ate a Monster's flesh…

Also, I don't feel any different after drinking the bat's blood, but that's most likely due to the healer…

"Hold on…," I said aloud, "I just got an idea."

What if… what if I were to take a bite out of a Monster's flesh, receive the maximum benefits from Envy of a Glutton, and leave the Dungeon to get treatment from a healer…

It sounds absolutely crazy, and it'll probably decrease my Sanity and Humanity by a lot, but to be honest, I'm getting impatient.

I have the ability to become so much stronger, so why don't I use it to the fullest.

Images of my sister and my father flashed in my mind. I need to remember why I'm doing this. As I am now, I can get more money much easier than before, but if I want to let Marie live a normal life and find a way to cure Dad, then I have to work harder.

Then, I suddenly heard the sound of glass breaking in the distance.

My eyes widened as I looked around.

"Shit," I cursed.

Any Hunter would know what that sound means. It was a Dungeon Shatter.

Even as an Independant Hunter, I've experienced a couple Dungeon Shatters before. I know that as long as you're close enough to be able to hear the sound of glass breaking, you're in danger of Monsters reaching you.

When a Dungeon Shatters, the light from it will glow much brighter and Monsters will instantly pour out. As long as there are Hunters or Heroes around, it shouldn't be too much of a problem for them, but the thing is that the Boss Monster from the Dungeon always comes out as well…

It's the dead of night right now. Thankfully, there shouldn't be that many people outside at night around here. I had brought my sword out with me since I wanted to try my Skills with it.

I quickly picked up my sword and started running towards where I saw a yellow light glowing.

"It's a Yellow Dungeon that Shattered," I muttered aloud as I ran in the direction of the light.

Today was a long day. I was tired from the two Dungeons that I cleared and it was also really late. I don't know if I'll be able to fight the Monsters properly, but my body started moving towards the light on its own.

There aren't that many Heroes that patrol this area since there isn't much crime around here in the first place. Many Heroes don't even live in smaller cities like City C. A lot of Hero Agencies are located in big cities and Heroes prefer living in places where they can get more attention. Uma is one of the rare Heroes that aren't like that.

As I ran, I quickly got my phone from my pocket and called Uma. After a couple rings, he picked up.

"Uma!" I half screamed, "Did you hear the Shatter?"

"Yeah!" he exclaimed, "I'm on my way there!"

"Me too," I said between breaths.

"...Marin," Uma said my name correctly, "It's a Yellow Dungeon-"

"I know!" I cut him off, "I'll be careful!"

"...Alright…," Uma replied slowly, "Don't you dare die."

After saying that, he hung up.

"I wasn't planning to," I whispered into the air.
