Arrogant at first sight (3)

He speaks ignoring her desperate eyes "I got transferred to Ooty".

Vedha gasps.

'Transfer? Now?!'

She speaks urgently in shock "Who will handle this case now?! We are so close! If we produce the evidence in the court, we can punish that criminal! It's that easy! If this ends, the same team can find Adhi very easily!".

He states drily and frustration hidden in his tone "Adhi encrypted a software in his laptop".

Vedha loses her words and remains speechless for few minutes. As soon as she understood what he meant, she too asks frustrated to her core "Self destruction software?!".

He states disappointed "Yes. So, we have to know the password for further proceedings. We can try the three chances but I don't want to take risk at our hardwork".

She nods understanding "Oh.." and gets sad thinking 'He never shared...any passwords...other than the case details ..'

He asks with a slight eagerness itching in his voice "Do you know the password by any chance?".

'He shared about the case then he might have-'

Vedha shakes her head sadly "No..".

Seeing her sadness, Vinoth could only get silent. He couldn't hurt her further. He could sense her difficulty in speaking by her broken voice and speaks softly "I need you to do something for me.".

She looks at him again hopefully "What?".

'Just tell me everything is just a setup...and he went undercover or something.and I shouldn't open my mouth about that...I will wait for eternity but just tell me that you know! That he is alive and talked to you!'.

He takes out a laptop bag from the floor and hands her "You have to safe keep his laptop..".

She opens her eyes wide in sudden realization "But this should be in Police's custody! The Department may ask this anytime-".

He shrugs carelessly "I replaced it with a fake one".

She couldn't help whisper in horror "What?!".

'I would be imprisoned for this!'

He nods "I can't trust anyone at this point. The restaurant claims this blast as some maintenance fault but I don't want to believe it until everything gets proven".

Seeing her already thinking, he asks "So... will you?".

She nods with a small smile and speaks faintly "I would love to..but..".

He asks with a frown "What?".

She asks worriedly "Can I ask you something?".

He nods instantly.

She clutches her fist in anxiety and asks staring his eyes "Am I the only one believing that he would be back?".

Vinoth smiles sadly "No.. You are not alone in this".

Vedha felt herself crying and sniffles looking down "Okay..". This is what she wanted to hear.

'But I am alone..in my own way..'.

Vinoth tries to cheer her "I will be the one who will be doing the brother's ritual in your marriage. Do you remember his condition?".

She chuckles remembering it and speaks wiping her tears "He asked me to promise that I should give you the rights to do the brother ritual things on the wedding...I said no..".

He gets offended "Why?".

She smiles "You don't have to be my brother to do that..he always wanted me to call you as brother..and I always refused".

He creases his eyebrows still oblivion of her word's meaning "Why?".

She explains with a weak laugh "He doesn't believe that a man and woman could always be just friends..and also he said he always wanted to make you as his brother-in-law..but without a sister he couldn't. So he wanted that to happen in other way. Making you as my brother".

Vinoth scoffs "He is an idiot".

Vedha's smile turns into a whimper "He is.."

'I wanted to make him realize that was wrong..wanted to challenge him..'.

He stands with a sigh and speaks tucking his hands in his pant pockets "Well.. I will see you guys in your marriage? Someday..".

She asks keenly "How can you be so sure?".

She wanted hope. A lots of hope actually . To fill this void.

He smiles meaningfully "He always knows better than everyone of us.. remember?".

She states her doubt "But he wouldn't have arranged the date if he knew..".

He nods in deep thoughts "True.." and gets sad.

Seeing her looking down worriedly, he takes out something from his pocket nonchalantly "I also have something else to give you".

She looks up to him blankly "Hmm?".

As soon as she found them, she felt her eyes betraying her facade of acting normal.

Vedha whispers with her frosty eyes "Rings...His family's...".

'He wanted to propose....not a simple confession that I guessed...'.

Vinoth speaks handing her the rings "I would be really busy with my next case. I want you to take care of yourself as doctors instructions".

She nods biting her inside cheeks.

Vinoth hugs her "I will meet you soon in hearings of his cases. Get well soon".

Vedha smiles weakly returning his hug "Mmmm.. You too..Take care".

She traces her eyes on him till he leaves the room and lets out a heavy breath at the sound of door closing.

Her bold face died in instant and cries caressing the rings.

She kisses them and wipes her tears "If this is what you want me to do..then I will do it...just come back soon...I don't like this feeling! It's heartbreaking and wants me to believe bullshits! Don't be late..I thought I am strong..but I think I can't handle this for even few days..".

She lies down on the bed hugging the laptop bag and the rings.

She feels homesick..she wants to be near her family..one of its members is missing..and she can't handle this loss, even though it would be temporary.

She opens her eyes instantly at some thought.

'Shit! I didn't call my mom yet! Krishna's House Warming Occasion too..I had to receive the invitations and forgot to send it via courier!'.

She doesn't even have time to cry now. Life just happens!

Life never waits for us to get ready..It drags us ruthlessly in its twists and turns. We too have to let it..we have no choice at this point.
