Chapter 20

Willa put a hand on Bonnie’s wrist. “We’ll get her for you in just a few moments.”

“Am I—”

“You’ve made it through just fine. You’re doing well so far. Recovery for this isn’t fun, but you’re off to a good start.”

Bonnie felt too weak to fully answer. She nodded and let herself sink back into the bed. She drifted off again right away, though she tried to resist.

The next time she woke, Tina’s hand was there. Immediately, the world felt better. Warmer. The way it ought to be. Bonnie said Tina’s name, softer this time.

“Babe. You’re here. You’re back. They say you’re going to be fine.”

Tina’s face came into view. Bonnie had memorized it wrong. Tina was more beautiful than the image she’d held in her mind. She felt like no matter how hard she tried, she would never quite be able to capture the way it felt to look at Tina—her wife.

Those words filled her with happiness, and then fear. Tina picked up on the change in her mood.
