The Future is an Ever- Haunting Ghost

The rumblings and quakes increased from all sides and they knew without doubt, that this was the end, not just for them, but for the world.

In the middle of their tears and emotionally lingering hug, the watch beeped and with their attentions fixed on what felt like their saviour, it said, "multiple anomalies detected! Rerouting to…" then it scrambled and went mute.

"Ano.." it buzzed again.

All this time, Michael, who held on to his sister's wrist, felt something strange. He was fading away slowly. His legs were not there anymore. His body was gradually vanishing in pixels as he wore an expression that was hard to project.

Michaela noticed that she wasn't feeling his warmth as much as before and looking towards her brother who was breathing very slowly, she realised most parts of him were not with her anymore.

She was speechless and running insane at the same time.

"Rerouting to home" the wristwatch said as a whooshing sound followed.

"Kkkreiqnn" a screeching sound penetrated the walls and interiors of their ears and other sense organs as they hit their bodies on what felt like a glass wall.

They had arrived back at the laboratory at Locatelli, intact, but their weary bodies and lightheadedness appeared to be overwhelming.

As they regained clarity slowly, they looked around them while their eyes twitched like they'd been recently concussed.

With dry tears on both of their faces, they looked at one another from opposite sides of this glass-walled chamber there were in.

Michaela smiled and slightly chuckled seeing her brother alive and not looking sickly in the slightest.

Michael got up from his feet with so much ease like he'd been doing that for a decade and ran towards his sister who was lost in her feelings to embrace her.

"So, we did it?" Michaela said as her face had new tears blooming.

"Yes, we did" Michael said as he blushed with his arms around her shoulders.

The chamber's door opened wide and they stepped out, still in shock of it all as their legs shivered from time to time as they moved

As soon as they stepped out of the chamber, the wristwatch on Michaela's wrist began to blink red lights staying mute.

Michaela wasn't really bothered about it. They'd been to the future and back, what could possibly be more scary?

As she was settling into this solace of her thoughts, the unexpected happened and it made them both to freak out with loud screams.

The chamber's door opened and closed pretty quickly and the whole chamber's glass came crashing down and every bit of energy and the energy-powered devices in the laboratory went off instantly.

What was this? Had the future pursued them this far?

They looked at each other, but couldn't see the horror-striken face of the other given the coffin darkness in here.

"Are we about to see Doomsday 2 all over again?" Michael said with humour dripping from his every syllables.

"For all our sakes, let's pray not" Michaela replied with a lot of hope invested in her words.

Was this a mistake? Had they hastened the 2099 apocalypse? These questions floated around the room but not on either of their lips as they waited where they stood for a miracle, or in this case, all of the systems coming back online.

Michaela's hopes paid off as the whole room went lighted up again but a lot of damage had been done to the laboratory. The wristwatch on her wrist was no better than dead as it had been stuck with an error triangle over its screen. The time travel chamber and it's energy supply had crashed and shattered unrecognisably beyond repair and smoke hovered around the room from the numerous multimillion dollar equipment that were stretched across the laboratory.

Michael was the first to reply to this sight as he let out a sigh of relief and acceptance of the toasted equipment that were right in front of his eyes.

"Well, the future was always a one-time quest for us, so it's okay. We're okay. We survived and we did good…" Michaela said, trying so hard to pacify herself.

"We didn't just do good, Michaela, we did great..come on! We defied every known law of time and space and did the impossible, and you know the badass part? We did that together just the both of us." Michael said as he stared at her eyes firmly.

"Yeah… you're right. What happens now?" Michaela asked curiously.

"We look more into the apocalypse theoretically and figure out a way to understand what it is all about, I guess. Michaela, we can't let it happen." Michael said to the mentally distracted Michaela.

"What if we can't stop it? What if the war happens still? What if we make it all worse?"

"Michaela, we will take it one after the other and like we've always done, we'll find a way to get through it. I've got you, and you've got me, and that's all we've ever needed" Michael said with all manner of emotions dancing in their heads and hearts.

From the looks of it, even the time travelers couldn't stop 2099 from happening.
