Karli laughed, which wasn't the reaction Cody expected her to have. "So you're feeling as intensely single as I am. That's probably the only reason you agreed to this date, right?"

"Yes," he admitted. "Though I also don't ever want to upset Claire."

"Why?"

"Because her boyfriend could kill me rather easily. We grew up together too; I know her through him."

It was nice being honest with an outsider to this extent. Normally Cody had to pretend a lot more than this. He had meant it when he said Alex could kill him easily but Karli seemed to think it was a joke.

She smiled. "So the fabled boyfriend is the scary type, huh? Interesting. He seems like such a teddy bear in the pictures she showed me."

"That would be entirely Claire's influence," he said seriously. "Anyway, this is getting off-topic. I showed up late and covered in blood. You're welcome to back out now if you want. I only came to apologize if you were still waiting."
