Chapter 163: Piper: Maybe the Shower Is Safe

Thankfully, the room didn't smell anywhere near as bad as the office. In fact, the room had a pleasant floral smell - and that's when I spotted the air freshener plugged into the outlet on the opposite wall. A single queen bed sat in the middle of the room, offset by nightstands on either side. Matching lamps that had to have been purchased sometime in the mid-seventies offered the only light.

I crossed over to turn on the lamp, which was my first mistake. The once gray carpet was now stained yellow and dirty. No amount of vacuuming or carpet cleaner would help that mess.

"I wouldn't take your shoes off if I were you," I said to Jax, who was still standing in the doorway. I turned my attention to the bed, which was my second mistake.

The comforter was threadbare at best and completely worn at worst. I shuddered to think what awaited me if I pulled back the sheets. As unappealing at the comforter was, maybe sleeping fully clothed on top of the bed was the smart thing to do.
