Chapter 17

“No, if this is a disease, it’s no one’s fault. Anybody can catch and carry germs. Even if you’re a carrier of something, you’re not to blame, and neither is the person who gave it to you, if it was an accident,” Evan says calmly, and Mary seems to relax a little.

“I’ll go for the blood test,” Mary agrees.

“Thank you.” Evan smiles, surprised when Mary smiles back.

“Is that all?” Mary asks.

“I think so, but we may have to come back,” Evan warns.

“And call if you think of anything weird that happened while you were away,” Rene adds. He’s kept pretty quiet throughout the interview, but now he breaks his silence.

“I will. It was a pretty standard visit, but I guess someone could have sneezed on me, and I’ve forgotten about it,” Mary says reasonably.

She agrees to get her blood drawn today and walks them to her front door. They get in the car and start driving.

“Any theories?” Rene asks as he drives.
