The skill allowed him to perceive anything or anyone that has a shadow! However, the range of this skill is 25 meters around the vampire, unless they use their lifeblood energy to expedite it!
This just goes to show how much power an elder has, as he used a low rank skill on 25 square kilometers of land without even breaking a droplet of sweat!
