Chapter 3? - Bases!

A little deeper into the mainland, where the shoreline was just barely visible, Irabel sat patiently behind a large wooden box, her eyes covered in makeshift dark green makeup, and her body smothered in mud. She had painted a swampy landscape across the box, then placed a small piece of turtle underneath.

"This trap is genius, no doubt." She whispered to herself, her body shivering as a small prickly crab stepped into the shadow of the trap.

"Hey Irabel, I finished the- what are you? Huh?" The crab scurried away before Irabel could pull the rope. With the wooden woman behind him, Haiso held up his new wooden finger, abit confused, but still determined to show off his craftsmanship.

Irabel snapped, she whipped her body around and smacked Haiso across the face. He violently slammed against the roots of a forest tree, almost losing his consciousness. "That could've been our dinner! You idiot!"

"Not - nice - Irabel." The wooden woman systematically muttered, "stupid robot!" With little force, Irabel pushed her to the ground, then stormed off. Her flute necklace swayed with her will, as she returned to base camp.

"Should we follow her? I don't think she got a good look at my new finger!"

"That - would - be - very - dumb - considering - the - current - situation." The wooden woman said, her voice cracking more and more alive the more she spoke. "No no, I know her well, it's ok." They traced to Irabels small tiki-like hut, where she lay flat on her back, spinning her flute in her off hand.

"Irabel! Check out my new finger!" Haiso had crossed the wooden flooring, guardrails, and all personal barriers meant to keep him out. Irabel sighed as she came to terms with the wooden finger shoved in her face.

"It's a nice finger, I like it." She whimpered, her eyes glistened with a sense of disgust. And Haiso finally caught on. He left the hut, and stood by the wooden woman's side as they made their way across the shore line.

Waves crashed against His feet, as he fought gently against the sinking sand. "I think Irabel just can't take it anymore, she wants to leave."

"Why - not - craft - a - nautical - structure - to - float - across - the - water?" Haiso sighed, kicking up some sand into the wooden woman's face.

"Whenever you leave in a raft or boat.. Or even if you decide to swim, you will become lost at sea, and you will always end up back at the island. Check this out…" They had arrived at Haiso's base, which wasn't far from Irabels. After climbing some creaking steps, the wooden woman noticed the weird- kite resembling room.

With screens and buttons all around, there were even sharp windows that wanted to point against the wind. Everything gave off the aura of hard work, from the carefully carved railings to the soft dark wooden chairs and doors, and above all, there was a small child's outfit hung up above a plaque, which read: The queen voyager.

"My base is.. Our last attempt to make it off the island. It had a great amount of technology so we could track our journey, yet, the tech didn't help, we ended up here all the same. So we decided to give up on the ship, and that's how I ended up with this place."

"How - saddening."
