Chief Loretta Sorensen stood before him, one hand on her hip, waiting for an explanation. Beneath her red lipstick, her lips were pressed together as if tied in a knot, and the skin around her mouth looked like porcelain that threatened to crack. Her usually warm hazel eyes were hard, piercing, beneath the fringe of her wispy blonde hair.

Though she was a good six inches shorter than Will, her anger made her seem to tower over him. Between clenched teeth, she spat, “Willis? What’s this all about?”

He held the folder up, then shrugged, his own energy spent. “Fuck it,” he said, tossing the file at the intern.

She fumbled it and the photos slid out to fall to the floor. When Sorensen glanced down, Will pushed past her back to his office. It no longer seemed worth the battle.

Fortunately, he wasn’t the only one fighting. Behind him, he heard Sorensen’s gasp. Janine hurried to explain, “She didn’t know—”
