When the day of the tournament arrived, the gym was packed with people. The excited murmurs of the spectators, the smell of metallic sweat and the bright lights made Joe dizzy. As he stood in the centre of the ring, his heart was beating like it was going to burst out of his chest. Gus turned to him one last time and put his hand on Joe's shoulder. "This isn't just a match, Joe," he said. "It's a battle to discover your own limits. Empty your mind and fight with your heart."
Joe's opponent was Marcus "Fist of Steel" Davis. 19 years old, a powerful fighter with two years of amateur experience. When Marcus stepped into the ring, the crowd erupted in applause. His charisma and confidence scared Joe a little. But fear was nothing new to Joe. Fear can either paralyse you, or it can make you stronger. This lesson he had learnt from Gus echoed in his mind.
At the referee's signal, the fight began. The first round was tough for Joe. Marcus was punching hard, penetrating Joe's defence. Joe tried to keep his guard up, but felt inadequate against the speed and power of his opponent. As the crowd cheered for Marcus, Joe was backed into a corner. Gus' voice could be heard in the distance: "Snap out of it, son! Use the fear!"
In the second round, Joe's tactics changed. He was observing Marcus' movements, looking for his openings. His opponent opened his guard for a moment as he threw his punches at speed. This was the opportunity Joe had been waiting for. In a sudden move, he landed a hard right hook to his opponent's jaw. The arena went silent, Marcus staggered backwards, off balance. For the first time, Joe felt he was back in the fight.
As they moved into the third round, Gus approached Joe and said with a grin: "Look, that's it! Use intelligence, not fear. Marcus may be strong, but he's not that smart. You can beat him at his own game."
Joe took a deep breath and walked to the centre of the ring. This wasn't just a fight. This was a battle for his very existence. As Marcus stood there with all his might, Joe said to himself: I may fall down, but I'll get up again. I'll get up until I win.
