Chapter 24: He'll Pay

And so I found myself back in Wellport.

Every time the phone rang, I raced to it, hoping to hear Charlie’s voice, or at least Calvin’s. It was always someone else.

It was a Thursday, and the mail had come in as usual.

I sorted two packages off to one side, letters to another, flyers to yet another, and picked up the newspaper.

Every now and then, I scanned the newspaper that the lawyer had ordered from Boston. I eagerly searched every single page for any reference to a Xander or even a Mary from a prominent family.

I never saw anything that I could tie to either of them. I didn’t expect this day to be any different.

Turning the pages, I read about weather, sports, murders, politics, and then...There was a notice in the social column.

“Mary Hampton to Wed Xander Crafton.”
