Lukas spoke first. More like sputtered. "What? Mom? What are you doing here? Are you..."
Lydia brushed him off. "I'm fine, but we need to turn around. And Wren, please get these ropes off me."
I stared at her. "W-why do we need to go back? We just escaped!"
"I know that, but your father is in one of the other jeeps. We need to get him. And please stop looking at me with those deer eyes and untie me!"
I hastily reached towards her and tried to loosen the ropes. My fumbling fingers did no good. "There's a knife in my pocket, use that to cut the ropes," she said impatiently.
While I worked through the binds, Lukas executed a messy three-point turn and was now driving back towards the building. Dust flew through the open windows, making me cough. It was tricky to cut the rope without hurting Lydia while the jeep lurched on the rocky road. It was getting dark much faster than we'd anticipated; the sun would set soon.
