Nearly poisoned

"I'm famished," Dahlia murmured, her voice tinged with hunger as she eyed the feast laid out before them. Her fingers ached with anticipation as her gaze shifted between the golden-brown roasted chicken, the creamy mashed potatoes, and the freshly baked bread.

The savory aroma hit her nose, making her stomach growl in protest. She licked her lips hungrily, already imagining how good the food would taste. At that moment, the long, exhausting day seemed to melt away. All that mattered was the meal in front of her.

She was about to take her first bite of the tender chicken when, without warning, Azriel's hand shot out. He snatched the fork from her fingers with alarming speed, his gaze fixed on the food with an intensity that made her pause.

"Wait!" he snapped, his voice sharp as a blade, slicing through the air. The urgency in his tone made her heart race instantly. She froze, her stomach twisting into a knot, sensing something was terribly wrong.
