Chapter 23: Return of Emo [1]
Ba-Dum!
The sound of a heartbeat echoed. The grey-furred monkey suddenly felt as if someone had literally added background music to real life. The moon strangely seemed to have aligned with the Cathedral.
A drop of blood. It was similar to a drop of ink spreading over paper, emerging from the starry sky. The moon was completely tainted red.
It was as if the entire cathedral had gained its own pulses, as if it was living. The leaking black blood from the statue paused mid-air and then started floating in the sky. All the blood drops accumulated, forming a sphere that was constantly in motion.
"Don't look!
Don't look!
Don't look! Don't look!
You'll die!
You'll die if you look!
You'll die if you look!
Thou shalt not pry into a God!
Thou shalt not question the authority of a God!"
But this demon's heart was ignorant. Though his instincts were screaming not to look into the horrifying scene, his eyes automatically turned. This was the power of temptation, something that momentarily clouds one's mind with a veil of fog, momentarily making them shortsighted.
The secrets of a deity; they were just too tempting. The monkey's eyes bulged as views popped out. Blood leaked out of his eyes as the sphere of blood slowly transformed into something horrifying. Something that he couldn't even comprehend; it seemed to have descended from a higher dimension.
His body could no longer handle it, bursting into bloody mist. The grey-furred monkey, the mischievous demon, today ended up dying like a fly. His death was extremely pitiful.
Slowly, the sphere of blood seemed to have taken a humanly shape, morphing into a humanoid structure. His organs were visible as semi-transparent skin held them all together.
The skin started to regain color. Now, this humanoid creature looked more and more like a human, as his body absorbed the remaining black blood floating around him.
An incomprehensible darkness surrounded this creature. As the body was almost formed, this darkness suddenly started to materialize, forming a black robe, similar to that of traditional Chinese robes.
With this, the transformation was complete. It was a handsome male figure, with pale white skin and dark black hair that seemed to go all the way down to the person's waist.
His robe fluttered slightly as his facial muscles twitched. Slowly, his eyes opened, a red glow flashing. The moment a glint flashed through his eyes, the moon returned to its normal color.
His floating body descended to the ground. Once it did, the mysterious aura around him disappeared. He would've looked like a normal Chinese man if it were not for the surroundings.
"I wonder for how long I was asleep?" Turning his head slightly, he sighed and continued, "It's a shame. The one who woke me ended up dying."
"Hmm, wait a second..." His eyes widened in realization. No single living being would expect that a deity like him would have such an expression on his face.
"Bone sword?" His eyes widened even further. He stretched his right arm, trying to summon the sword, but it was of no use.
A smile broke out on his face. "Ha! I got rid of it!" But to his despair, a whistling sound echoed in the air. A pure white long sword, in a spinning motion, smacked his head from behind. "Ouch!"
After smacking him, the sword, still covered in its sheath, landed on the ground.
"Oh! So, you're still here. Love to play hide and seek, don't you?"
"Bastard! The first thing that came out of you was 'ha'? I would've chopped you if I wasn't injured!"
"Injured? What's the matter, old pal?" He pretended like he didn't hear the first part.
Even after sleeping for so long, they were as familiar with each other as they could be, knowing everything about each other. Two friends had reunited once again.
"Well, I lost my bottom half."
"What?"
"My bottom half!" As the sword exclaimed, magically it unsheathed and launched towards the figure, who caught it with his right hand.
"Oh, now I see." The lower half part of the sword was missing. Including the hilt of the sword, it was only comparable to a short sword, with its lower half missing.
"Your rank has decreased. Stage 3 of Deity rank?"
"Yeah! Someone was cruel enough to break me!"
"Sigh, who would think that you're the bone sword constellation? You look so pitiful right now." Shaking his head slightly, the figure said.
"You're not the one to speak, Shadow Serpent Constellation!" The sword focused on the word "constellation" as he spoke this line.
"On top of that, you're missing an arm. Why don't you regenerate?"
"Well, that arm contains a few strands of my soul. Let me get it real quick." In a carefree manner, he closed his eyes.
A second passed before a whistling sound once again echoed. A wrinkled arm traveling in the air at a very high speed attached itself to the left side of the figure.
This wrinkled arm was holding the head of a man, whose face clearly reflected shock and pain. With a swift squeeze, the palm clenched, bursting the head.
As the soul strands fused with the original core of the soul, time seemed to have reversed. The wrinkles reversed, making the skin smooth.
"You still could only recover until the 5th stage of Deity Rank? I'm confused."
"Well, before entering slumber, I sealed other strands of my soul in multiple objects."
"I knew it; you're a masochist!"
"Nah, bro, you ain't the one to speak. Removing your bottom half, surely it was pleasurable, right?"
"Hey, don't make it sound so wrong! I can't sense where my lower half is; help me find it?" The sword exclaimed within the figure's mind.
"Why so restless? Let's first explore the world. I just hope the demons have had technological advancements."
"What if we've been woken amid a war? That might be the reason for us both to be awakened."
"Can't deny that possibility."
"Let's not get off topic. Find my bottom half!"
"For that, we'll have to go outside."
Saying this, he sheathed the sword and then finally walked out of the Cathedral through the exit.
Though he had already sensed that no one was present here, outside he confirmed it once again.
Any monster in the vicinity ran away after sensing his presence. All the buildings looked desolate.
He walked for a few more minutes, finding nothing. Giving a helpless sigh, he looked at the moon.
"Countless years may come and go, Yet the moon's allure continues to grow."
Closing his eyes, he spread his senses trying to find any life nearby.
As a few seconds passed by, he finally opened his eyes. "A devil fruit? It's been ages since I tasted one."
His figure disappeared as he channeled strength to his legs, immediately disappearing leaving behind a crater.
