Chapter 36 : Mixed Emotions
After he pulls away from his wife, Rune turns to me with mixed emotions, but mostly he looks like he wants to kill me. His lip curls back into a sneer, but he relaxes slightly as Selene puts her hand on his bicep. I swallow thickly but don't have the energy to cower. I feel like sleeping for another week.
"I see you're awake," he comments and sits down at the table right across from me.
"Yeah, um," I sigh and fidget, wincing as pain shoots through my side.
"You don't seem well enough to be out of bed."
"I was hungry, and Selene was kind enough to make me something to eat."
Rune nods and turns to his wife. They converse quietly in another language that I don't recognize. It's probably Nia's native African language. After a minute, Selene nods and heads out of the room. We both watch as she leaves.
"Tell me, Hemera, how many vampires have you killed?" Rune asks out of nowhere.
"What?" I sputter.
