Prologue

A young man with a frail appearance, pale skin, and dark circles under his reddened, teary eyes was sitting upright on his hospital bed. He was holding a familiar sapphire blue frosted birthday cake with the number fifteen candle on it.

It was a truly delicious cake. Even after tasting it fourteen times, the taste never got old.

Well… he can't remember his earlier years, but from what he was told, he was fed the exact cake every year; from his first to his fourteenth.

Usually, a few nurses and whoever was on break would be here to celebrate his birthday; however, today was a special day, he was turning fifteen in exactly one minute and thirty… twenty-nine seconds.

While holding the cake in both hands, Austin closed his eyes before thanking whoever was kind enough to give him such a luxurious life.

For the past fourteen… almost fifteen years of his stay in this luxurious … hospital room was nothing short of wondrous.

He was given free shelter.

He was given complete freedom to order any food he wanted.

He was given complete freedom to purchase and play any video games.

Although he was not allowed to leave his room, he did not mind.

Despite his deteriorating health through the years, he felt fortunate.

He was given many things that an orphan like him should not have obtained.

Even now he had no idea who had sponsored him.

"To whoever you are, whether I am an unwanted bastard child or an unwanted sickly child, I thank you."

After blowing out the candle, Austin picked up a spoon before taking a bite.

"Ah! so good!"

As if determined to finish the entire cake, Austin ate mouthful after mouthful despite his blurry vision from the non-stop tears rolling down his face.

Not even the incessant beeping from the heart rate monitor could stop him.

After all, his life was predestined to end.
