It had been a couple of weeks since her mother had died, right in Elaine's arms as she struggled to complete her words and nothing was the same. Nothing at all.
It had come as a shock. When her mother fell over and suddenly stopped moving. At first, in her state of fear and denial, Elaine had thought she had fainted and had rushed to get her to the local physician.
A dead giveaway should have been her father silently holding unto her mother's hand, rubbing it gently, a raw look in his eyes, yet his expression, blank. But Elaine did not let herself believe anything more than her mother had simply gone into shock and had fainted.
