Killian placed the golden necklace on the table and observed it with sparkles in his eyes.

I leaned closer to see it better. The necklace came in a crimson jewelry box, making its gold and gemstones stand out even more.

"Do you like jewelry, Young Miss?" Killian asked.

Not really, but this necklace was captivating. I didn't want to say that and make him think I'm coveting something that belonged to Madam Mezzanotte. Considering Killian's zealous devotion to his masters, he might turn hostile.

"I am a female, and we love sparkly things." I tried to sound aloof about it.

Killian pushed the box toward me in slow motion, and my ears started buzzing.

It was like my existence was captured in the static that separated me and the necklace from the rest of the world.
