Scarlet Bunsen attack

Beneath me, the valley was a mess. Several homes were obliterated to rubble. A pair of winged demons tore the roof off a church like paper!

Aiming my staff at one of them, I fired the Bunsen spell at it. A second pip above the spell appeared. The system reminded me I only had five charges for this spell an hour.

The demon I hit melted into nothing. Only its lower half remained after being hit with my spell. The second demon looked at me, and its eyes widened. Between teeth that poked out of its mouth it rasped the name of my staff. "The Thorn!"

A third pip appeared above my spell as I flushed away its right side. Both of their bodies, or what remained of their bodies, fell back and onto the ground.

A shadow passed over me. The smell of rotting meat and spoiled dairy insulted my nostrils. There was a loud thud as something landed behind me.

Another one?

I charged up my last and final attack. Spinning around, I fired at the demon. The attack washed over its face, melting it. It crumpled, falling to its knees. I could see the inside of its neck, a series of thorny vines that slithered under its hairy flesh.

After confirming that this was the last demon, I relaxed a little. "Well, that was easy." My reward was given to me that instant.

I was able to study the system a bit more. Its menu displayed my name and age, my wizard level, and any spells I knew.

"Name: Rue Baydo

Level: 2

Spells known:

Lesser Summoning: Selkie (15/100hp)

Lesser Summoning: Carbuncle (26/100hp)

Greater summoning: Scarlet Bunsen (100/100hp)"

Both of the lesser summoning spells were written in white letters while the greater spell was in gold.

According to the system, I had a cooldown range of five seconds and I had 345 materia out of 1,000 left in my pool of mana. I guess the amount of magical energy for each spell isn't always the same. I wonder if the strength I put into a spell requires more materia?

Checking my equips and armaments, I learned the robes I was wearing were considered uncommon mage's robes. The staff was a rare equip called the Twig from the Ygdrasil, though it had the nickname of "Thorn of Kabbalah."

"Let's see what this bad boy is capable of." I clicked on the staff's description.

A box appeared on the screen, telling me I would only be able to read some of the staff's descriptions, since I was a low level.

"I'll have to learn how to level up. Maybe then I won't get attacked by some psycho."

Clicking "okay" on the dialogue box, I was able to read the base level abilities of the staff as well as some other details.

Twig of Yggdrasil

"Great. I can't read most of this crap!" I closed the Twig's menu. I swiped to the next screen. It told me my current gold and belongings. "At least Demiurge is letting me keep the house as my property. It's worth as much as my gold."

I had one thousand gold and two silver.

"I'm obviously not gonna sell the house. I clearly need it since it's a free place to sleep. Not that money is an issue."

My stomach rumbled. I hadn't eaten this morning, but I doubted the village had food for me to eat. I opened the system and swiped until I found a map. According to it, I was located in the Anima kingdom. The city i was closest to was the Spiritus City, and the village I was at was south of that. It would be a fifteen minute trip into the city.

"Sorry, poor village. But I've helped you enough. I'm not the kind of hero who's gonna help you fix your town."

Marching around the perimeter of the village, I found myself at Spiritus city. It was a walled city, and two armored knights stood at its entrance.

"State your business." one of the guards asked.

"I'm only here to get some food. Is there a diner or something in there?"

The guards exchanged glances then nodded.

"Just past the gate, turn left on Main Street. Take the street until you reach a palace called Pyrra's Pub. You'll find some food there, kid." They opened the gates and let me in.
