The Stonehearted Knight

'Why can't life be simple? I just wished to be the next baron of Grindeston. Now I have to face the world and Heavens above, only because of the damn stone acting like my heart?' Hex Darkenmane, scorned and despised by people and his fate, struggled in the dark chasms of the Endless Mountains to have one chance at becoming Blessed. Once he threaded the path of Knights, he would challenge the baron and gain everyone's respect. But things weren't as simple as he imagined. Only after gaining a Blessing and starting as a Squire did he learn the truth about the world and the Heaven governing over it. The baron's power knew no limits, Heaven wasn't as benevolent as preached, and his origin wasn't as simple as he believed. To make things worse, his master didn't seem interested in teaching. He landed in a battle between powerhouses and Heavens and was confronted with his origin. But like he never despaired in the deepest chasms of the mountains, he never considered giving up no matter how high the odds were stacked against him. "Give up? Why? Isn't it just the entire world and the Heaven around it, coming at me? Even if I stand alone, I won't be disheartened. Step by step, I will thread on my foes, going beyond Heaven itself. The road is long and lonely but don't pity me, for I don't pity myself. Toward others but especially towards myself, I am stonehearted." _____________________________________________________________________________________________ Finally, I have a discord. I decided to write my own story, trying to blend traditional fantasy with web novels, adding weirdness as the main spice.

Hex gone berserk

Slyth cursed as he was cleaning up the main room and the side chambers.

He needed to destroy all traces of their research and tests done so far. Although the intruder was dead, it was never too much to be safe.

As part of the Dawnbringers he knew better than most how unforgiving they could be when things didn't go as they wished.

"It took me ages to catch all these beasts. Now they are all dead," Slyth grumbled whilst cleaning his sword. As he exited the first chamber, the slashed bodies of the animals could be seen in the cages.

As a triple Blessed Squire with a glyph, Slyth was authorized to deal with things as he saw fit. Having finished the first chamber, he still needed to erase the second chamber.

"I guess only the person in the third chamber matters. All others can be replaced."

He entered the second chamber, closing the door behind him.

For a while, the only sounds that came out of the chamber were muffled slashes, with a few groans in between.

"That should take care of it," Slyth said with a grin as he exited the second chamber.

"The only thing left to do is to take the person from the third chamber and destroy this place."

Slyth opened the third door. Unlike the other two rooms this one didn't have cages. The room was white and clean.

On one side of the room stood a simple table with a soft chair. On the other side, there was a bed.

A beautiful girl with light brown hair lay on the bed, sleeping peacefully.

Slyth picked her gently up and placed her on his shoulders. He exited the room and walked to the side of the opening. From his pouch he retrieved two ember colored crystals.

On each side of the opening a small slot was carved in. For those who didn't know about it, it would seem like a natural pattern of the cave.

The crystals were placed in the sloths. It immediately lit up a multitude of thin carvings made in the wall. The crystals seemed to be corroding the walls along these lines.

'According to sir Elron the cave will collapse in a hour so after the array has been activated. I should make it out safely.'

With the girl sleeping over his shoulders, he exited the cave. Outside the cave Slyth's eyes fell on the unconscious body slumped against the wall.

"I nearly forgot about you little buddy. I guess I lost interest once your idiot friend killed himself." Slyth had a bored expression on his face as he looked at Gorge.

Someone as thorough as him couldn't just leave Gorge alive. There was a very slim chance he would survive the collapse. But as long as there was a chance, Slyth wouldn't allow it.

He pulled his sword and walked towards Gorge. One slash was all that it would take to kill the young boy.

But just as he was about to swing his sword, a shiver ran through his spine. He wasn't alone. Something was behind him.

His senses were screaming at him. There was a dangerous creature near him.

With a start he turned around. In the dark a figure appeared.

It was human. His figure was slightly slouched. Steam-like red light came out his body. His black eyes were tinged with red.

Slyth strained his eyes, trying to see his features. In the dim lights coming from the cave, he finally got a look at him.

"YOU!"

Slyth exclaimed in shock as he recognized the person. It was the person who killed himself.

A boundless stream of energy coursed through Hex's body. The energy was so immense it couldn't be contained within his flesh. It was burning the air around him.

Hex struggled to maintain lucidity. He felt rage, an animal instinct to tear everything in his path.

With great effort he got back on his legs.

'I…I s-should take Gorge a…a-and get a-away from here.' Hex struggled to form a complete thought but he still managed to.

Hex was about to step toward Gorge, when he noticed his opponent appear in the chasm.

On his shoulder he was holding a person. The appearance of the person remained hidden from him.

But it didn't matter to Hex. A surge of rage welled up inside him. 'I-I have to c-contr…'

Hex tried his best to not let the rage take over, but he saw his opponent take out his sword. He saw the sword go up in the air. It was ready to kill. To kill the boy who called him big bro.

Hex snapped. Anger took over him. He let it take over.

ROAR!

The boundless anger, the unwillingness to lose one more person, the frustration with his weakness, all merged in an ear deafening roar.

His opponent froze. Hex pounced at him.

Bang.

The body of his opponent flew and crashed against the wall. The person on his shoulder fell on the floor. She didn't move nor make any sound.

Seeing his opponent get back on his feet, Hex rushed over. Slyth was not a pushover. He regained his bearing. He ignored the pain and broken ribs, activating his glyph.

Bang.

Right before Hex crashed into him, the snake-shaped light wrapped around him. Hex collided against the cloak formed from the light.

Apart from a groan, nothing else seemed to have happened to his opponent.

His inability to kill his opponent infuriated Hex even more. Blood rushed to his head. He punched the snake-shaped cloak with his entire strength.

Crack.

His opponent seemed shocked by the web-like cracks appearing on his cloak. He found it hard to believe the increase in power Hex was displaying.

But he didn't give up. He focused on the snake cloak around him. It morphed into a fluid body, coiling around Hex. Hex could feel the light tightening against his body.

"Let's see if you can't escape my bonecrusher!" Slyth screamed with a maniacal gleam in his eyes.

The snake's body contracted even more. It was trying to crush Hex's ribcage.

At first Hex tried to pull the cloak apart, but it wasn't working. His opponent used this chance to attack him with his sword.

The sword cut deep into his chest. Hex roared in pain.

He stopped focusing on the snake-shaped cloak. Enraged, he let his body act as it wished. And it wished to smash.

Bang!

Bang!

Hex used his immense strength to hit his opponents body. The cloak was stretched thin. Cracks appeared. The cracks spread out.

His opponent was hitting and cutting deep into him. The burning sensation of his flesh opening up fueled Hex's anger only further.

There was no rationality left. With each wound, Hex hit even harder.

He didn't care about the pain. He didn't care about the damage. There was only one thing echoing in his mind.

'KILL!'

'KILL!'

'KILL!'

Hex was bleeding profusely. But he didn't stop punching and smashing.

CRACK!

Finally, his opponent's cloak couldn't endure anymore. With a loud sound it cracked.

Slyth's eyes were filled with dread and anger. He couldn't understand how his opponent returned from the doorsteps of death.

The punches of his opponent smashed his already damaged rib cage further.

He spat out blood after blood. He was about to die. He was unwilling.

"YOU WILL FOLLOW ME SOON!" He screamed.

BAM!

Hex used both his hands and slammed down on his face. His skull caved in.

BAM!

Hex continued to hit his opponent, even after the body stopped moving.

He roared. He hit.

It was as if all pent up frustration was leaving his body.

The opponent's skull was gone. Bone and brain lay splattered all over the floor.

Hex roared and finally stopped.

He fell on his knees, growling and breathing with grunts.

It took a while before the chasm fell silent. In the dark, three people lay on the floor.

Thud.

None of the three heard a small part of the ceiling inside the cave fall.
