Chapter Twelve: The Weakened Bond

Gabriel, Kara and Michael finally arrived in a city, much larger than the last one. However, the entire town had a giant wall around it. Spikes pertruded from the walls. Michael jumped down from Gabriel and looked up to the top of the wall. " Is anyone there? " He called out, as an old man peaks over the wall down at the trio.

" What is your intentions? " the old man called from over the wall. " We are to seek out overseer" Michael answered, shouting up at the old man.

After a few moments of tense silence, a gate opens in front of them, and they are directed to enter the town.

" I'm guessing this is some kind of resistance? " Kara asked Michael who nodded.

" Yeah. Margaret has brought all the surrounding towns together. She has been leading the resistance against the Vampires for a long time now. Killing and teaching us the best ways to defeat them. She has been a huge help. Making sure we all have something to eat, organizing the battle strategies and trade routes. She is practically invaluable at this point. Her insight is amazing" Michael explains as they walk through the town. Garnering stares, not simply because they were outsiders, but Gabriel had not shifted back into his human form. It would be too late now regardless, everyone knew of the giant black wolf in town.

They continue making their way down the main street, seeing that most of the stores and homes had been converted into battle stations and armories of sorts. It was actually very impressive considering how much progress the humans had made. Though they weren't sure how much their efforts meant when it came to Vampires. Kara and Gabriel knew first hand how dangerous and resilient the Vampires are.

It took a few minutes but they finally reached a giant court house - like structure built in the center of the city where Michael motioned Kara and Gabriel to follow him.

They make their way up the dozens of steps and pass by the cracked white stone Columns, and enter into the building where they are greeting by a few dozen men and Women, all with police riot gear and guns, and a woman bent over a table looking at a map and pointing out what seemed to be trade routes of some sort.

" You have visitors, Overseer " One of the men whispered in The woman's ears who turned around to reveal that it was indeed, none other that Margaret.

" Kara? KARA? " Margerat smiles and runs to Kara and hugs her tightly. " I've missed you so much " Kara hugs her back tightly, " I'm so glad you are safe sweetheart" Margaret cries which in turn makes Kara cry. This is the woman who had raised her from childhood and Kara couldn't help but be overjoyed to see her. " Come with me! " Margaret takes Gabriel and Kara's hand and takes them off to an office of sorts. Michael follows but Margaret cuts him off " Nuh uh. You stay out here" she commands and closes the door behind her.

" Its been so- "Kara was cut off by Margaret who seemed enraged now, her eyes were showing an intense anger and pain that Kara had never seen before from her.

" WHAT THE HELL DID YOU TWO DO? " Margaret screams as she walks over, placing her hands on her hips, expecting a good reason as to why Vampires had overtaken earth.

" We..we didn't know the Vampires had come here..we have been dealing with so much " Kara explained everything her and Gabriel had been dealing with since they had been gone from earth. It was a long winded explanation but she tried her best to make it short without sacrificing any important details.

" Well now most of the Earth's population is gone. And there is nothing we can do about it. We have been trying to fight against them but we are losing the battle. We are barely surviving as is. And we have to find a way to get rid of them before there is nothing left " Margaret points out.

" We know. That is why we are here. We are going to get rid of them. We are bringing them back to the Underworld and keeping them there. We have no intention of letting them back onto earth ever again" Kara explains, feeling even more guilty.

" Really? And how do you plan to do that? Just gonna ask them nicely? " Margaret barks which makes Gabriel finally speak up as he shift back into human form. " We are going to handle this. But we are going to need your help to do that. Can we count on you? " Gabriel knew things were bad here but they had been through just as much and he didn't appreciate Margaret's attitude.

" Yeah..you can count on me and my people. But we want them gone as soon as possible " Margaret explains. " I am going to set you both up a room and we will figure this all out tomorrow. Get some food and some rest " and with that Margaret walks out of the room without another word, leaving the door open.

" What the hell.." Gabriel Growls. Kara could understand it though. She had lost her daughter and then was payed back with seeing her people be massacred and losing her home. Of course she was upset and it was their own fault. They had to fix this somehow"

A man steps through and motions for them to follow him. He leads them down to another room in the building where there were two beds which were shoved in what looked like an old office storage room. Both sigh and take a place on the beds and debate their life choices.

" We have to fix this Gabriel. Margaret has lost so much because of our mistakes. There has to be a way to make things right. We need to figure out how we are going to bring the Vampires back" Kara layed down on the bed and stared at the ceiling.

" Well, we could try brute force. But I doubt that is going to work " Gabriel lays on his own bed, staring at the same ceiling.

" I mean, there has to be someone organizing them. There has to be" Kara wasn't sure who it could be. Gwen was the only one who could technically lead them that was alive and she wasn't leading them whatsoever.

" Do you think it's Gwen? " Gabriel asked, almost as though he could read her mind.

" No. She wouldn't do something like that" Kara kept her answer short, still being slightly bothered by seeing Nate and Gwen together. She loved Gabriel and he was the only one she would ever want. But seeing Gwen with someone else still hurt. She imagined that Gwen felt the same way.

" But how do we even know that? We can't trust Vampires.." Gabriel scoffs which makes Kara turn to him.

" Gwen wouldn't do something like that. She has a good heart. And also, I'm half Vampire ya know? So watch it.." Kara warned. She knew Gabriel had his reasons for disliking Vampires but he didn't know Gwen like she did. He didn't know how good and pure her heart was.

" It bothered you seeing her with Nate didn't it?" Gabriel asked which left Kara staring blankly through him. She wasn't expecting him to ask that. She wasn't expecting this to even come up.

" No..it didnt" Kara answered, which Gabriel didn't believe whatsoever.

" Yes it did Kara. Don't lie to me" he was calling her out and she didn't like it.

" Gabriel, you don't know what you are talking about " Kara rolled over, facing away from him.

" I do know what I'm talking about. It bothered you seeing her with someone else. It wasn't something that you were expecting. And denying it doesn't make it any less true " Gabriel persisted but Kara fell silent.

" Well you are mine. We are mates. And that is not -" Kara rolled over and faced Gabriel directly. " I know what the fuck we are Gabriel! I know I'm yours! What the fuck are you implying with all this? " She snapped at him, which made him stand up and tower over her. " You still love her..don't you? " He asked, making Kara fall silent again. " That is why the bond didn't work as well when we fought her father. It's because she was there..and you couldn't concentrate.. " Gabriel was growing more and more angry as he spoke.

" You wanted to be my mate..and now you are having second thoughts" Gabriel continued. " You turned her down. But what does that say? You turned me down before. The only difference is I didn't move forward past you and she did..." Gabriel's words were cutting through Kara like a knife deep within her heart.

" And after seeing her happy. Seeing that she didn't need you..makes me somehow become a consolation prize" Gabriel had wondered this since the battle against Gwen's father. He knew something was wrong and he knew it wasn't from his side. He had given up far too much for her. He loved her with all of his heart.

" Gabriel..you are not a consolation prize. If anything, Gwen was a consolation prize that I feel freaking horrible for. It wasn't fair for me to latch onto her in the way I did and I feel bad about it. And I'm going to feel bad about it for the rest of my life. But that doesn't take away the love I have for you. But she is a good person. She really is. She is way better of a person than I ever could be" Kara confessed. She felt horrible about everything that had happened with Gwen and she was happy happy see her happy. But at the same time, seeing her with someone else did bother her. And Kara wasn't sure why that was.

" Yeah. Sure " Gabriel goes back to his bed, and rolls away from Kara.

" Seriously? " Kara groans. " Fine. Act like a fucking child then " Kara growls and walks out of the room, slamming the door behind her
