Chapter 51

Gene looked very uncomfortable. He wasn't sure how to answer my question.

Could he really be hiding information about Auriel from me?

"I am, Beatrice." He probably couldn't lie directly in front of me. "I'm sorry I can't be someone you can trust completely."

He looked away and tried not to meet my gaze.

I held his sleeve. "You've always been looking out for me, Gene. Whenever you hide things from me, there's usually a good reason for it. There's probably something that's dangerous about that information, right?"

He nodded. "Yes. It's best if you didn't know. You'd be in danger."

"I see."

"You're not mad?"

"I'm not." I paused. "I won't force you to tell me whatever it is you're hiding right now, but I hope that maybe one day you will tell me...when all this is over."

"Thanks, Beatrice."

I tried to smile. "Let's go home."

"Ok." He returned my smile.
