Chapter 20

I kept my gaze on the woman as she walked away. She didn't notice that I was staring closely at her, wondering what she had in common with Auriel besides the symbol.

"What's wrong, Beatrice?" Gene asked.

"She had a card with the same symbol on the card from Auriel. Let's follow her, Gene!"

Gene grabbed my wrist. "Beatrice, don't. It's dangerous."

"It might lead us to Auriel! And we'll find out more about why he's stealing those books. We'll be a step closer to catching him!" I couldn't hold in my excitement. I didn't want to lose my chance of finding a lead.

He kept his grip firm. "Please, Beatrice. Let the police handle it. Stay out of it."

"I still have a score to settle with that guy!"

He pulled me into the empty alley nearby and pushed me against the wall. He had a serious look on his face. I had never seen him wear such an intense expression.
