Chapter 96

“What do you think we should do?” I said, after I had read the report.

“I think that it would be best for all concerned if the matter was allowed to quietly die. The money has stopped flowing, and the parties involved surely realize that with your uncle’s death there will be no more.”

“Yeah, I agree. Do you think I should tell Grandmother?”

“In a word, yes. Don’t leave such a loose end hanging.”

“You’re right, I’ll take care of it.”

We took Grandmother to the hotel for dinner Saturday evening, leaving the babysitter in charge of the kids and Giuseppe’s designated assistant in charge of all of them. Giuseppe drove us to the hotel and had dinner with us. About halfway through the meal, Grandmother said, “Marco, I always seem to know when you have something on your mind, so you might as well bring it out in the open.”

“Luciano has a final report from the investigators in Rome.”

“The ones who were looking into the blackmailers?”

“The same.”
