Chapter 2: Monsters' First Appearance

From a distance, Sam saw a monster that he was extremely familiar with.

It was a large humanoid creature with a strong build. There was a pair of horn protruding out of it's forehead and large fangs in its mouth.

"Is that an ogre?"

(Yes Sam.)

Sam was surprised to see an ogre as this was not a fantasy world but a modern world, and he had already confirmed this multiple times.

"Wait! This no time to think about this. Luna, tell me if mom is still safe since there is an ogre here, that means that there could be an ogre to other places."

Sam immediately thought of his mother and wanted to immediately go home. He does not want to lose her in this life and even death would not be able to separate them.

(Sam, you're mom is okay. She is just currently experiencing a mana overload, which causes her to faint since her body can't handle the massive amount of mana in the air.)

"She fainted? Is she okay? And do you mean by mana?"

Sam asked while he dashed towards the ogre in front of him. Since it was already in his way, he doesn't mind killing it.

(Yes. You're mom fainted but she is okay for now. It seems like someone has infused mana into this world and opened these portals where this ogre came from. It seems like there are several weak portals that have opened in advanced.)

The ogre seemed to have noticed Sam running towards it as it raised the wooden club it was holding in an attempt to attack Sam. But the ogre's movement was too slow for someone of Sam's level so he dodged the attack rather easily.

A black sword then appeared on his hands out of nowhere (and by nowhere it means the system's storage space), it was about a meter long, one finger thick and was only one inch wide.

But as it hits the ogre, it cut through the ogre's body from shoulder to the waist in a diagonal cut. The ogre's body then separated into two according to the cut made.

[Ding! You have killed a Common Ogre! You gained 15 experience points]

[Ding! Congratulations to User Sam, you have unlocked the leveling function. You received a Leveling Box for unlocking this function]

"Wait! What?!"

Sam was perplexed when he saw the notifications that he received. But before he could even ask Luna what the hell was happening, another notification pop out.

[Common Ogre Corpse detected nearby, do you want to extract the Magic Core?]

"Okay, Luna, explain it to me!"

(The system contains several functions that are still locked and in order to unlock them, you must meet the certain requirements. The requirement for opening the Leveling function was to kill a monster, it is one of the easiest function to unlock but because there are no monsters in this world, I thought that you would never be able to open it. The Magic Core is a valuable stone that contains a large amount of mana compressed inside of it. It can be used as a source of energy or a material for crafting and alchemy.)

"Ahh! So that means, this system still has a lot of functions locked? And it all depends in me to unlock all of them. But why was I able to get stronger without leveling up, isn't there some kind of limit to how strong a human can be?"

(The leveling system's function is to open a class and obtain titles. The additional attributes is just a bonus. And you are right that there are limits to how strong a human can be but Sam, you are not exactly a human. So that limits do not affect you.)

"Oh yeah... Since my race is Origin and not Human anymore. By the way, extract the Mana Core for me."

[Common Mana Core extracted]

"Luna, is there any other ogres around here?"

(There is three at the northeast, 20 meters from here)

"Okay, let's kill them and go home after that."

He immediately dashed and soon enough, he found three ogres, the same size as the other one from before. They were surrounding a middle-aged man who was holding a knife. Behind the middle-aged man is a little girl about five-to-six years old.

Sam put on a black mask he had casually created from before. It was covered with strange rune-like letters that is of not from any language in the world.

He did not have the time to change clothes as he is in a hurry and it seems like the middle-aged man will not be able to hold on any longer.

*swish

Sam vanishes from his original location and he appeared between the ogres and the middle-aged man. His sudden appearance startled both parties as the middle-aged man was shocked to see someone suddenly appearing.

The ogres, on the other hand, were angered as they thought that they are being belittled by being stopped by a small creature.

*roar

One of the ogres roared as it raised the club it was holding and attacked Sam. Another ogre was also attacking Sam from the left while the third ogre shifted it's attention to the middle-aged man and the little girl.

"Cover her eyes!"

Sam used his black sword to cut the club of the first ogre, while he kicked the club of the second ogre. The club that he kicked was sent towards the third ogre hitting it on the head.

He then jumped and did a triple twist on the air as he lands a downward slide towards the first ogre's head. After that, he kicked the first ogre using the force to propel himself towards the third ogre.

He pierced the head of the third ogre using his sword as he immediately retracted it and then sent it towards the second ogre, beheading it in the process.

Sam looked at the three ogres that he had killed than to the notification he received.

[Ding! You have killed a Common Ogre! You gained 15 experience points]

[Common Ogre Corpse detected nearby, do you want to extract the Magic Cores?]

"Yes"

[Mana Cores Extracted]

Sam then turned his attention towards the middle-aged man and the little girl whose eyes are still covered by the middle-aged man. Sam signaled him to turn around and he understood it immediately.

"Carry the girl and let's get out of here."

"Okay."

The middle-aged man understood what he meant to say. He carried the girl but did not remove the hand covering her eyes.

"Daddy, where are we going? Are the monsters gone?"

The little girl asked. She was still trembling and it seems like she was terrorized seeing those ogres. The middle-aged man comforted the little girl who seems to be his daughter.

When they were a few meters away from the place where the ogre was, Sam stopped. He can see that everyone was panicking seeing the ogres and it seems like the police are struggling to take them down.

'I have to help them, but I also have to make sure that mom is okay.'

"Thank you very much for saving us."

The middle-aged man walked towards Sam and thanked him. The little girl's eyes were still covered as their corpses littering around which was really discomforting.

Sam nodded to the middle-aged man and said.

"You guys should find a safe place, I'll be going now."

Although the middle-aged man wanted to follow Sam, he knows that he will just be a burden and helping them before was already enough. He could just find a place to stay with her daughter and wait for the chaos to stop.

Sam did not wait for the middle-aged man's answer though as he already dashed away, heading towards another direction where Luna located another group of ogres.

Meanwhile, back at their house.

Wendy just woke up after she fainted, although she was still feeling a little bit dizzy that made the world spinning, she steeled herself and picked up the phone.

Going through her contacts, she called her son.

*ring *ring

*ring *ring

"Hello? Mom? Are you okay?"

Wendy was relieved to hear that her son seems to be okay with his voice. But she couldn't help but frown when she heard a faint scream at the background, it sounds like there was chaos at the other side.

"Sammy, is everything alright there? I can hear screaming, are you okay?"

"Yes, mom. I'm okay, but I want you to do something for me."

"Everything for you dear. Tell me, what is it?"

"I want you to go inside the underground bunker and locked the door. Don't go out until I said so. Can you do that for me, mom?"

"Why would I go inside dear? Is everything alright? Where are you right now, I'm picking you up."

Wendy was worried after she heard what Sam said. It seems like something is wrong but she don't know what. Opening her phone, she saw the many notifications she received telling her the chaos currently happening in Calamba, Laguna.

She saw pictures of what looks like ogres, from the game her son loves to play. Then she saw the gory scene of severed limbs and head all scattered around. The news reporter did not even have the time to edit the gory scenes as she reported that 172 people were killed.

She then saw another picture of an individual wearing a mask, the mask looks very familiar but when she saw the clothes the individual was wearing, she was shocked.

"T-That's Sam's clothes. The one that I bought for his birthday."

"Mom? Mom? Are you there?"

"Mom?"

"MOM?! ANSWER ME?! IS EVERYTHING OKAY RIGHT THERE?!"

She got out of her dazed when she heard her yelling son, and looking at the individual on the screen, she was certain that it was her son.

"SAM, WHAT ARE YOU DOING RIGHT NOW? AND DON'T YOU DARE TELL A LIE OR ELSE I WILL GO OUT AND LOOK FOR YOU."

Her son was silent for a while until she heard a sigh. She then heard her son's gentle voice.

"Mom, I will explain everything later but know this, everything is okay. I just really need you to get inside the bunker. PLEASE."

Wendy went silent this time. She can piece together from what she had seen that her son is not an ordinary person. He is currently in Calamba which is over 100 km away from her location and it would take over 2 hours to get there, not to mention the traffic.

She remembered that he said that he was out for a jog, so that means, he traveled 100 km in just a few hours. And now, seeing him on the news, killing those monsters, she can't help but worry. But she needs to trust her son and show him her support, even though she is really worried.

"Okay. I get inside, but you have to promise me that you won't get hurt."

"I promise you, mom."
