The two college students went inside the newer coffee shop as Spencer needed coffee after all for his headache to go away.
"Hey do you think I can try some of your coffee?" Jess asked while feeling extremely excited to experience something else new. Spencer sank his head deeper in his hood trying to hide his flustered face.
"Sure but just a sip."
"But what if I really like it?"
"Then I'll buy you some?"
Jess gasped. "Really, you'll buy me one?!"
"Just ONE." Spencer said as they walked up to the counter.
"What are you getting exactly?" Jess asked while looking at the big menu as if she was amazed how many different choices they had.
Spencer stole a quick glance at the curious ink girl. "I'm just getting a Dark Roast coffee." He said knowing she had no idea what he even said.
She looked at him extremely confused.
"I can't explain it but you can try it." He said while getting out his wallet.
Jess smiled deeply as she looked back at the menu.
"Can I have a Dark Roast coffee please?" Spencer asked while placing a $5 bill on the counter.
"Sure and anything for the lady?" The cashier asked.
The bell to the door sounded as the two didn't think to look.
"No, we are sharing."
"Oh I wouldn't have imagined." The cashier bluntly stated. Spencer was caught of guard by the sudden rude comment.
"What the hell is that supposed to mean?"
"Oh well... I mean.. There's people that look like you.. Then people that look like her and it just doesn't happen." The man said as if he had nothing else better to do than pester the demon.
Spencer's face turned sour as he was about to yell at this man. But before he could, Jess stepped in.
"Hey, enough with the lip and make our coffee!" She snipped as she glared daggers at the cashier. His eyes widened as his face grew red.
"Gah, y-yes ma'am." He said as he quickly ran to the machine.
Spencer was slightly taken back by Jess stepping up for him. "Uhh thanks." He said.
She looked back at him still frowning as she wasn't happy. "You don't need to thank me. That was extremely rude of him to say something like that. I don't need a heart to know that much."
Spencer wasn't used to this kindness as he WAS used to people treating him like this. Being a demon isn't easy as your constantly judged. "Hey Jess, why don't you pick a spot to sit. I'll be over shortly."
"Really I can pick where we sit?" She asked slightly shocked.
"Yeah I'll be there in a second, okay?"
Jess sparked up in excitement as she quickly ran to a table. Spencer looked back seeing her looking around for a spot to sit as if she was a five year old. A small smile crawled on his face as he felt his heart warm up slightly. Suddenly he felt a pair of eyes on him. He looked around as he didn't notice anyone else in the building. "Here you go sir." Spencer looked back as he saw the cashier with his coffee. Spencer grabbed the mug. "You know I was going to give you the remaining as a tip but I'm thinking you should give me a cookie for my friend or you can bring me the change since you were SO nice to me." Spencer said in a sarcastic tone.
"Uhh... Are you being serious or sarcastic?" The guy asked while looking confused.
"Why don't you come back with my change or a cookie. Either way we won't be coming back to a place that isn't welcoming to everyone that steps through the door." Spencer said as he showed his sharp teeth in the corner of his mouth.
The cashier tensed as he regretted his comment earlier. "O-okay sir."
Spencer walked off to Jess as he saw her siting at a booth while she was messing with the creamer cups on the table. Spencer lightly chuckled to himself as he sat in front of her. "Whatcha doing?" He asked.
"Uhh I'm wondering what this is." She said while lightly squeezing the tiny cup.
"Well don't do that it'll pop." Spencer said while holding out his hand. Jess got nervous as she dropped the cup in his hand.
"Here.. Let me show you what it has inside." He said while being very patient with the ink girl.
He peeled the small paper off the top while pouring a little creamer in his coffee.
Jess watched fascinated as the color in the beverage was changing.
"Uhhh it looks so cool." She spoke as if she was a little kid.
Spencer felt his heart warm seeing her this way. 'This is really cute the way she's acting but she was slightly scary with that cashier earlier.'
"Hey Spencer?" Spencer tensed as he realized he practically staring at her. He began blushing again as he spoke up. "I'm sorry, I was in deep thought. I wasn't meaning to stare."
"Oh it's not that I was wanting to try a small bit of the coffee." She said while pointing at his coffee mug.
"Oh uhh yeah, here." Spencer said while handing her the mug.
Jess looked down at the hot beverage while holding it up to her nose taking a deep inhale. She held the cup up to her lips as she slowly sipped. Her eyes lite up as she pulled the drink away from her mouth. She licked her lips as she felt warmth going down to where her stomach would be.
"Woah."
"You like it?"
She nodded while smiling really big. At that moment the two were interrupted by the cashier. They both looked up at him as he had a mug and a cookie. They were both shocked and slightly confused. "It's on the house." He said while placing the change on their table.
Spencer's mouth gaped slightly. "Uhh thanks." He said while taking the other mug.
"It's to say I'm sorry about what I said earlier." The man spoke in a shaky tone.
"It's not a problem." Spencer said while looking away. The man walked away while looking off in the distance in fear.
"Wait we got a free drink and a cookie?" Jess asked while looking at the coffee. Spencer took the mug while inhaling deeply to smell. Breathing out with his eyes closed, he looked up at Jess. "Same thing as the other. If you want you can have that one since you already drank from it."
Jess sparked in happiness. "Really? Thank you so much!"
Spencer smiled as he sipped his coffee. 'Too cute.' Suddenly something was caught in the corner of his eye. When he looked for a split second he saw something but it faded away into nothing. Spencer rubbed his eyes as he felt he was seeing things. 'Must have been in my imagination.'
"Spencer, are you okay?"
"Uhh yeah, I just thought I saw something over there."
Jess looked behind her. "I don't see anything."
"Well I think I'm going to get this to-go then. I might not be feeling all that well. I could have drank too much and it could still be in my system."
"Oh okay." Jess said while getting up.
"Where are you going?" Spencer asked.
"Getting to-go cups."
"Oh okay. Thank you.."
"Your welcome." She said while walking over to the cashier.
Spencer was sipping on his coffee some more as he progressed to drinking more. That's when he felt eyes on him again. Looking up he saw the sudden figure disappear yet again.
Spencer set his mug down as he placed his hand on his head. 'Okay I know what I saw... What's going on?'
"Here.. Let's get you home.... Wait what's in your coffee?" Jess asked while staring at his beverage.
Spencer looked down and tensed as he saw something swimming in his coffee. His eyes widen as he threw his mug while hearing it shatter. Jess growled as she walked up to the front desk. She smashed her fists into the counter. "Hey prick get your fucking ass out here and explain why you put something alive in his drink?!" Jess screamed out as her hair began to fade into black as ink was slowly forming her body. She noticed how the no one was in the front desk. "Jess....I.....don't feel good..." Jess's attention was on Spencer as she began to panic when she saw him wobbling in his seat. She ran to him quickly as his body fell out of the booth to the ground. While quickly skinning her knees on the floor, she caught him before he could crush his head on the tile. "Spencer, Spencer look at me." Jess said grabbing his chin while forcing him to face her. His eyes were still open but he seemed dazed as he wasn't making eye contact. Jess looked around quickly as she realized no one was around to witness what happened. "Damn it, I need to take him back." Jess said while getting ready to pick him up. Suddenly she stopped when she felt something sharp on her back.
"Move and you die." A man's voice was heard. Jess's eyes widened as she refused to listen. 'Fuck this prick. If it's a fight he wants, it's a fight he's going to get.'
