Chapter 10: On Great Expectations and Wealthy Daughters

Clara’s POV

Mother set her teacup down on the table, turning her head to peer at Anabel as she paced in front of the window on the other side of the sitting room.

The Wentley Estate, my childhood home, was quite large compared to some of the houses owned by the families of high society. It rivaled Cavendash Manor in terms of size, but the grounds were slightly smaller, and the Wentley Estate didn’t have its own village.

I missed it sometimes. It was comfortable, bright, and modern compared to the somewhat medieval Cavendash Manor. It was decorated in pastels instead of the deep mahogany paneling and wine-red walls that caused Cavendash Manor to stay in a perpetual state of darkness all the time.

I sipped my own tea, grimacing at the sweet, milky taste that Mother preferred over the light florals and citrus tea I ordered at Cavendash.

Anabel stopped pacing and returned to her seat, reaching for her own teacup, her eyes far away in thought.
